Default Help with firefox browser

Okay, so I just reinstalled my operating system and for the first time ever I'm experiencing some really annoying problems with firefox. It won't let me sign in on my google account and I had to download flashplayer and my google toolbar through Internet Explorer. I'd really like to be able to stick with firefox because I like it more than I.E. and it's supposed to be safer, but it's just being so darn stubborn. I've told it to make exceptions for the things I want to do, but it's a no go. Then I uninstalled it, deleted all the program files, and reinstalled it again, but I still have the same problems. Help!

Can you be more specific about "it wont let" you?
You just installed windows XP? is your firewall on and blocking it?

Whenever I try to connect with Gmail, Firefox says it was taking too long to connect to the server. When I try to download things like Google Toolbar and Flash, nothing happens. I get a window that says to go into options and make exceptions for the particular sites I want to download from, but when I do that still nothing happens. I get the same window over and over. I did install windows XP. I have Zone Alarm activated but I'm pretty sure I didn't block anything from Firefox or Google.

Are you able to otherwise browse the internet using Firefox?

yes, I can browse the internet, I just cant sign into my google account or access any of the links on my toolbar (like wikipedia). I can't install any software either. From the site Neverfly gave me:

Starting with Firefox 2, the yellow message bar says "Software installation is currently disabled. Click Enable and try again". Just click the Enable button on the right side of the message bar.

Now that you've enabled Software Installation in general, click the "Install" link of the extension or theme again to install it.

I've tried this, but when I click Enable nothing happens. I've tried reloading the page several times but no luck.

Maybe I should uninstall 2.0 and download 1.5 instead?

Check out this website

The third entry down, "Unable to Install Extensions, Themes, or Certain Plugins to Firefox" seems to describe your problem. Although it appears to relate to upgrading Firefox (as opposed to a fresh install), it's worth checking out.
