Default PC brigade rewrites history

As an engineer one of my all time hero's was I K Brunel.

I browsed a new reference book on the great man last week, remember that photo of him standing by the huge nautical chain? They have airbrushed his cigar out

I don't recall ever seeing Lincoln with a pipe.

In the opposite direction, handicapped advocates have demanded that a memorial to F. D. Rooselvelt depict him in a wheelchair, which would have horrified him in his lifetime.

I don't really see the point of PCing IK Brunel; he pretty much became un-politically correctible after Jeremy Clarkson named him Greatest Briton of All Time.

Yes I can.

I remember a Soviet postage stamp from 1978 or '79. It had Leonardo da Vinci's "man in square/circle" -- possibly the most iconic image ever... wearing briefs underwear.

Yes, I remember this controversy breaking a couple of years back. Nonsense at best, potentially dangerous imo.
It's not just that photo either(Brunel Universities cigar-less statue);

As a resident of Bristol I'm fortunate to freqently use many of his constructions, they're solid, built to last & look good.
Of interest to my fellow BAUT members would be the (supposed) astronomical alignment of his Box tunnel carrying the train line to London. Apparently the sun shines along its length each year on his birthday!

& it was a jolly good party here in Bristol for the bicentenary of his birth last year!

The British Christmas Pantomime has not been spared either, characters
like "Wishy Washy" have been dropped, and One production of "Snow White" had all the seven dwarfs renamed.

When angry parents complained the theater claimed, it was not PC but Disney
has copyright on the names of the dwarfs

Yea, since when has history *not* been rewritten? Although there's probably a less sinister reason for the "edit" in the OP. Maybe the copy of the photo the publication had needed retouched, and it was a casualty of that process. My girlfriend is a professional photographer and digital artist, and spends most of the day every day retouching photos. I've watched her and seen similar instances all the time: contrast or background "noise" or whatever needs removed and an object that's not necessairly insturmental to the photograph gets brushed out.

Or maybe those kids that do the "S-t-a-n-d" Commercials (does anywhere other than ohio have those?) have paid off someone in the engineering reference book industry. Dunno.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt's cigarette holder. Not a single sculpture or image at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Monument in Washington, D.C. shows him smoking.

It's true, though. I don't know the circumstances, but if it's the seven dwarf names from the animated film, Disney named them. The original seven dwarfs, so far as I recall, didn't actually have names. Or personalities. It was part of the Disney reworking that gave them both.
