I'd love to have something like that for my car (on a HUD of some sort) so to keep an eye out for wildlife on the highway at night. Maybe add it to the optional package with the moon roof.

Hey, my car has a moon roof.
Also, Moose, you don't realise how close that is. The new Lexus LS600h (to be launched in the UK this year, I think) has a pair of IR cameras that it uses for what they call "lane-keeping assist". Also, the cameras get used by the dynamic vehicle integrated management (or whatever they call it): it uses the lane-keeping assist monitors, traction control, ABS, EBD and variable-ratio power steering to offer oversteer and understeer control. The car also has built-in microwave radar for the active cruise control (to maintain a set gap to the car in front). Next step will combine all that with sat nav, so you join the motorway, tell it which exit you want, then have a kip until it gets you there!!

Oh, yeah, and the headlights include active IR projectors, so the lane-keeping assist monitors will always be able to see more than you can!

I just talked to my office mate (a retired F-18 pilot) about FLIR approaches. He said night vision goggles and FLIR make a world of difference* but they aren't allowed for nigh carrier landings. They were considered just one more distraction. Instead, naval aviators have to "fly the ball". Having you head down and locked looking at the FLIR could get you killed in carrier ops but if they could find a way to project it on a heads up display, it could possibly be very useful.
He said the difference between 1991's Operation Desert Storm where they had no night vision equipment and 1998's (?) Operation Desert Fox (he lead the bombing attacks on the first night of that one) where they did was incredible. |

Apparently El Reg discovered that Google Maps UK's suggested route from London to a nearby town was through Sweden. Another one I've seen not long ago (possibly posted here) involved something like 40+ U-turns and 50 odd kms to go to the hotel literally across the street.

They may also make a pilot more likely to look at the deck purely because he can. Not something you want to be doing when landing on the boat. |

As I understand it, "the ball" is a device that throws colored light at different parts of the glide slope. Green for "good glide path", etc. You can't distinguish color on FLIR or NVG. It's monochrome.

I hadnt considered the monochrome nature of the NVGs i just thought that without the NVGs a pilot will be looking at the ball and has no chance to indulge in looking at the deck. I thought that with NVGs looking at the deck would be possible and perhaps even more misleading and undesirable than during the daytime |

Is the ball of which you speak anything like a VASI (visual approach slope indicator)?

Yep. Same idea.

A pretty good description of the system can be found here. There are two main components. IFOLS (Improved Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System) provides vertical guidance while LRLS (Long Range Lineup System) gives lateral guidance. Together, they're like an optical ILS.
