Default Kamakazi Ex's murder/suicide

Okay, I if you haven't heard about this yet, the article is on CNN here.

Anyway, to sum up, this woman's ex had custody of the daughter for the weekend. Instead of returning her to school on Monday he rented a plane and crashed it into the woman's parent's house kinning himself and the girl. If there's a silver lining it's that though at least one of the in-laws was home, they were not hurt.

Okay the thing that's been bugging me is every article i see says "Police suspect he did this on purpose". What do you mean "suspect"? Witnesses say the plane was coming in like going for a landing, and then veered off sharply. I guess they should check just to be sure, but "suspect" makes it sound like there's like a 60/40 chance that this was on purpose. That it crashed into the in-laws house out of anywhere it possibly could have crashed should make it more like a 999,999/1 chance that it was on purpose. Dunno why it bugs me but it does.

I thought that too. But, you know for legalities, they have to say suspect. What bugged me is the added statement in the article I read said "based on his flight path".

Lol good point, I belive it's based more on his "landing zone".

Anyway, sure it could be for legalities, but what happened to legalities when that guy came forward and said he was the one who killed Jean Bennet? (sp?) Even though their first words were "We don't want to jump to conclusions like we did last time" They were followed up with, basically, "This guy did it 'caus he's a weird pedophile killer!"

Of course, he turned out to be weird and a pedo (and, IMHO, completely nuts), but not the killer. Go figure.

Was it the in-law's house it landed on?

He was on the cell with the mother-in-law, and he had bought a house near his ex, but nothing I saw linked the house he landed on to the family in any way.

Default It's more than being afraid of being sued

I believe its more than being afraid of being sued. I thought that the FCC would come down on a journalist/media outlet like a ton of bricks if a story ran proclaiming someone's guilt before they were tried.

No; the media has been getting around that by quoting people. As long as the media reports that somebody said it, they are generally in the clear.
In this case it is a direct quote from the officer involved.

That officer would have just been better off just saying we are treating it as a homocide/suicide, and say nothing else.

Good point Doodler: those in the American News Media (don't ask why I capitalized that ) are rarely held responsable for what they say. Oh well, it can be as entertaining as it is frustraiting. But it's rarely informative (despite what the talking heads on the commercials for said news programs say).
