Default Doomsday chicken-eating calf

Quote:
CALCUTTA, India — When his chickens started disappearing a few weeks ago, a farmer in eastern India figured dogs or jackals were to blame — until he discovered his calf making a meal of his poultry.

Aha! See! Even cows are starting to get tired with the whole vegetarian stuff! :-P [Runs and hides form the giant mound of carrots that get flung at him]

Someone should check the calf's diet. I remember deer and sheep, eating birds...

Ah, National Geographic: Scottish Deer Are Culprits in Bird Killings

Quote:
Red deer on the Scottish island of Rum may be eating the heads and legs of live seabird chicks as a way to get minerals they need to grow their antlers.

Scientists believe this surprising addition to the red deer's diet stems from mineral deficiencies in the vegetation they eat. By munching on Manx shearwater chicks, the deer are able to get the extra calcium they need.
[...]
Bob Furness, a seabird ecologist at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, is among a handful of scientists worldwide to have researched bird predation by deer. He has also studied bird-eating sheep, on Foula in the Shetland Islands.

The article mentions, "The local veterinarian was at a loss for an explanation."

Uh, perhaps the calf was hungry? Did anyone bother to determine whether the calf or it's mother weren't getting fed enough?

This just shows you that true to the line uttered by the Chaos Theorist in Jurasic Park, "life finds a way."

Well, perhaps not the chicken - but at least the calf.

Well, with reports that hippoes will sometimes chase crocs away from their kills so they can eat them themselves, I think it's fairly well shown that the concept of totally vegetarian mammal species is a myth.

That was the title on the forum where I got the link, I thought I might as well go with that idea.
It was a thread at GLP.

the title was a parody on doom threads, on the GLP chicken thread, as it is here.

So... it was funny if one knew the context, and merely confusing when I didn't.

I guess I shan't go reading GLP so I can be in on the jokes. I'll just have to ask when I get confused.

Consider the total opus and perspective of Frog march's posts and you'll see why such a title was irresistible.

Being an old farm boy, it's hilarious that city folk don't understand that ALL grazing animals get some protein from insects and small animals in the grasses.

Do they all think that the hay is sterilized????

duhhhhh....

I believe chickens are not particularly shy about resorting to cannabalism, either.

Turtles... they have a tastier meat and a crunchy shell.

The calf wont have the hard time chasing it , but will have a hard time cracking its shell.

A calf with some form of four-legged pica. Strangely when humans get pica, we tend to eat non-nutritional items like paper or ice.

All, I know is that I've been around farms a lot, and never once have I had a hankering to eat a chicken whole. Although I did snack on a pigeon once. (Not much meat on them and kind of stringy)

Cows can get 'hardware belly' a condition of too much indisgestible inorganic stuff in their stomach that they ate. A favorite worrisome 'delicacy' is used shotgun shells left around by hunters out after dove or quail.
