Default my music video project

Hello,

For a class, I had to make a music video. This was my first video I've ever filmed/edited/etc. Tell me what you think!

Some parts (i.e. transitions, timing, got a little messed up after rendering, but its not too bad).

The song is "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot" by Brand New.

Have any past film projects? Post 'em!

Pretty good overall. I got the plot. Good exposition. It's hard to tell a story in 5 minutes. Stood up to silent viewing.

I'm mostly into niggling geeky details.

Too much headroom in some shots. A little shaky where it probably shouldn't have been. Some zooms were too fast and sloppy. Got a little tired of the fade-down/fade-up transitions. Sometimes heads were missing -- but fine if it was tension-raising intentional. Need more cuts on the beat; let the music motivate the editing. Lighting or settings, I think in guy's room didn't provide enough contrast, and it's hard to shoot indoors with a bright window in the background.

Liked the split-screen. Pretty good actors for kids -- but of course that was the director's magic, right?

Better than I would have done.

Thanks :-).

Yah, after burning it to a DVD, and then ripping it to my home computer, and then posting to youtube.... the music for some reason got knocked out of place. It USED to be synched up to most of the events (particularly on the cymbals crashing).

And this was the first video I've ever shot/edited/what have you. Soooo, I wasn't expecting much to begin with. And I was really limited on time, so I shot it very fast (and thus, quality suffered). And I was still learning the camera (which is just a crappy one my father picked up from walmart a few years back), so that accounts for the sloppy zooms. I learned a lot from this project though, so my next endeavors will probaby improve in the above areas you mentioned.

I appreciate the constructive criticism! It helps me see where I need to focus more. However, I think most of the above mistakes can be improved greatly if I wasn't pressed for time on this particular project.

Haha, also, you might have noticed things going wrong in the background in some scenes; my friend can be seen in the far left holding a light when the couple are eating dinner before she dissapears, and also--in the final scenes of the guy approaching the girl's house, you can see her sitting in the shade of her garage in the left (hey, in the arizona heat, I dont blame her lol). There are other mistakes and stuff. But hey, not bad for my absolute first video.

Thanks for viewing and commenting!

Edit: Oh, also.. Their clothes change periodically! haha. Like I said, this isn't supposed to be professional, its just a simple project to learn basic video editing/shooting/etc.

Oh, yeah, I forgot computers can shift the soundtrack. Never had that particular prolem in the olden days.

Just blame the cinematographer. I think that was pretty good for a first effort. You seemed to understand the language of video, and speaking in images. Did you study the subject or just grow up understanding the idioms?

Speed kills. It's always easier with a bigger time budget.

Did notice some of those. I was unsure about how many characters there were for a while. I tend to identify by dress not strange new face, and I thought there was an extra guy in the story. Just a different shirt. Continuity problems, gaffes, I usually don't notice. I watch the story for entertainment, but at the same time think about how I'd shoot it (and sometimes direct the crew because I'm used to my shouting accomplishing something). That doesn't leave many cycles for actually seeing the video.

Yeah, I think just practicing with that camera, or whichever equipment you'll use, getting real smooth so what you imagine in your mind you can quickly and accurately capture, and you'll be in pretty good shape. Practice!
