Unkown satellite-like device falls into Somalia

Mon. March 26, 2007 01:42 pm.- By Mohamed Abdi Farah. - Send this news article

(SomaliNet) A baffling device which resembles a satellite or Unidentified Flying Object (U.F.O) has landed in a rural area close to Buulo-Burde town, 220km north of the Somalia capital Mogadishu, eyewitnesses told Shabelle radio on Monday.

Villagers report that the device had fallen in a remote jungle area, some 40km north of Bulo-Burde, killing one camel. No experts have reached there to find out exactly what the object is.

The unknown object is sitting on an area of one 100 meter square as people grew more concern over the device that it might explode or contaminate the area.

The device is said to be intact and not broken as it gives alarming signals. No one knows where the satellite-like device had come from.

“In the evening of last Wednesday, a large device flew over us and some time later, we heard a big sound, BAM” said Ilyas Ali, a villager who lives nearby where this large device has fallen.

Ilyas said in the daylight it glitters and but in the nighttime, it turns lights and speaks a strange language which can’t be understood by the villagers.

The news of the fallen device was too late because of the remote area it landed and poor communication. Details are emerging in the coming days.

Wouldn't any language a satellite was programmed to speak likely be unfamiliar to Somalian villagers?

"It glitters[...]"
"[...] in the nighttime, it turns lights [...]"

I wouldn't give much stock to "[...] speaks a strange language [...]" when the reporter employs so many other creative English constructs.

Any noises, signals, lights issued, not understood, could be a strange language in this context.

Question for those who know about satellites:

What kind of satellite is equipped with speakers, and emits sound?

"...n the nighttime, it turns lights and speaks a strange language which can’t be understood by the villagers."

yet another thing ...a couple of days ago there was as reported a 7.9 earthquake
and a tsunami on the Somali coast

Probably some formerly-balloon-borne scientific instrument. A satellite would not have survived re-entry.

Maybe that village is very remote that the people living there knows only their own language and nothing else.

I had comments... but they are now in the locked duplicate thread.
Oh well, not important.

OOOO! Can I pretend to be Jay for a minute and say something (I think) I've seen him say before?

The article says it resembles a satelite or a UFO. Assuming they mean alien space craft, and not the literal Unidentified Object (it was never seen flying, just falling )

How do they know it resembles a UFO? We don't know what a UFO looks like.

See, I said my comments on the other thread weren't important, but they get repeated anyway. Gee, I knew I should have re-posted here.

LoL. Well, at least I credited someone. Even if they were also your comments.

I also would like to echo what nowhereman said in that I have a hard time believing something would go through reentry and crash land, yet still be able to operate.

More likely that it fell from a plane or a helicopter or a balloon.

That's assuming the reports are even close to being accurate and/or properly translated. Some of those sentences can't be parsed. Others could easily have been mangled in translation to the point of meaninglessness. "Talking in an unknown language" may have originally meant something closer to "making funny sounds".

Given conditions in the region, that would be most of them. I sincerely doubt English is a common language out there.

In Africa, speaking only one language is actually pretty rare. However, as was pointed out before, most of those languages would not be used by cultures which have sent satellites into orbit.
