Default Boy Finds Watch

Quote:
A wristwatch buried in the ice at the North Pole three years ago was found by a boy more than 1,800 miles away after it floated ashore on the Faeroe Islands.
Niels Jakup Mortensen, 11, spotted a black box near his home on Suduroy, the Faeroes' southernmost island, his mother Anna Jacobsen said. Inside, she said, was a watch that had been buried at the North Pole by Joergen Amundsen, a descendant of Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen.

None of the important questions mentioned, but go stray off the story and mention global warming?

Odd. I thought the North Pole was always frozen. Maybe they are taking a lot of license on naming the exact location of where it was buried.

And no mention of when it was buried, or what Rouald's descendants had to say.

It's either a hoax or incredibly poor journalism.

I am very surprised that something placed in the ice at the North Pole can migrate all the way to the edge of the pack-ice in less than three years. Does anyone know if the ice is really that mobile?

The minimum distance from the Pole to the edge of the ice is about 500 miles. The ice would have to be moving at about half a mile a day to make that trip (assuming the unlikely idea that it made a bee-line to the edge).

I doubt they know.

They did say three years. I'm sure that was a date on the letter. I doubt they tried to make contact, and only got the information from the letter. The oceanographer was easier to find.

My vote is for incredibly poor journalism. I see a lot of this lately. Take a story, and try to relate it to the controversy du jour.

Did you read it? It's the same article word for word.
The only "bit more" about it is they printed km instead of miles.
