Your feelings are nothing new here in the US. Assuming "hoardings" mean billboards/signs, there has been a lot of argument against them here in the States. I know in most towns/cities there are strick rules about what kind of signage you can post infront of your business.
That being said, there are still plenty of large advertisments along US roads. Critics of commercialization/urbanization have often fortold of a future with ads on everything immaginable. I'm not a fan of the genre, but I believe this is a common theme in the "steampunk" universe (is that the right term?). Also seen in Back to the Future, and many other futuristic fantasy movies.
