Well, I often get the German word for "shoot" mixed up with another German word. Won't give the German word for Shoot in case I accidentally use the other one.

So schnell ----- the Prouse nicht -- "the Prussians don't shoot so quickly", or approximately, "Rome wasn't built in a day".

Regardless, I'm jealous. The only prize I get with my gas is a little slip of paper reminding me of just how much emptier my bank account now is.

Yeah, it's probably difficult to get straight when you live near those Island inhabitants that mess up all of those "ize" words with an "s", and randomly insert "u"s with thier "o"s.

I'm not sure how "bad" this one really is because it is reporting the claims of a doctor. But; theres a few obvious things missing.

Walk It Off: New Kicks Promise To Help Win Battle Of the Bulge (except for intro, it's all video)
Quote:
Doctors right here in Cleveland are testing a new method that promises to help you lose weight - it's all in the shoes.
It's simply; weights in the shoes. They make it so wonderful and new and revolutionary.
They even let people try them on to see how comfortable they are. Oh; yeah, great. Now could you please let them wear them a while and see how comfortable they are?

Good: At the end, the anchor bantor actually asks why is this any different than ankle weights.
Bad answer: The convenience? I don't think so, I can vary the wearing of ankle weights without having to keep extra pairs of shoes, or mess with changing shoes.

Edit: Nobody pushed the angle that its the looks and you wouldn't have to hide them under your pant cuff. That would be the advantage that makes the most sense.

Default Things that go Woo in the night ...

Oh, say it ain't so! Not that CNN is the pinnacle of reporting excellence to begin with, but an article about the "Ghost Hunter" from the show Ghost Hunters??

Quote:
Every day is Halloween for Wilson, co-star of the Sci Fi Channel's hit show, "Ghost Hunters." Close encounters of the paranormal kind would drive most people to look for another hobby, but Wilson says he ain't afraid of no ghosts.

"That's part of the job," says Wilson, who investigates suspected hauntings with his co-host, Jason Hawes.. "We tell everyone that we train that you'll be punched, slapped and grabbed. Be prepared for it."
Uh...huh... *backs away slowly*

Quote:
They are ghost hunters, or, as they prefer to be called, paranormal investigators.
I have a few things I prefer to call them, but this is a family forum.

Anyway the part that really gets me is that this is an article that is not in CNN's "Entertainment" section, it's in "living". And they basically present the story like 'ghost hunting use to be thought as crazy, but now it's real and perfectly acceptable'. To be honest, they might recend that and present the "ghosts still have not been shown to be real" thing later on--I couldn't take it anymore, so didn't finish the article. Blah.

Another one of those "...well, not really" articles.

Euclid man bypasses bypass surgery to vote
Quote:
A man who was supposed to have triple bypass surgery Tuesday morning cancelled the operation and voted instead.
That might be news but...
Quote:
His operation was cancelled and Konet decided to take advantage of the unexpected chance to vote.
So; it wasn't really his choice... thank you for wasting my time.

Lol. So, things at the polls are going smoother than expected so they have to write stuff like this. I've seen a handfull of examples like this recently though; where the headlines and the story fail to mean the same thing. It's like some papers don't even know what words mean anymore; they just got too use to using generic phrasing for their stories.

CNN has one article that's full of that...
Scattered problems reported in historic U.S. vote

To go with my other reference on the Vote thread.
Quote:
Election officials are encouraging voters to dry off before filling out ballots.
I also saw an article where some NC town actually thought of using paper towels to minimize the problem.

And somewhere near here...
Quote:
In the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, a caller reported that ballots didn't include the page to vote for president.
The first 4 people got 1 page by mistake, and they were just handed a new ballot.

Quote:
Other issues involved apparent attempts to misinform potential voters: People in Texas, Missouri, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas reported receiving text messages telling Democrats to vote on Wednesday, the day after the election.
So; how many believed it? and are they able to trace the source?

Quote:
One voter, casting a ballot in Douglasville, Georgia, outside Atlanta, said it took him six minutes to fill out his paperwork and vote.
Wow...just one?

Don't you just love it?

I've been thinking how great it could be to start a sort of "overwatch" organization that reports not based on sensationalism or bias but on raw facts, with the goal of informing people what their elected officials* are doing after they're in office.

I think it would be a great service; people often get to election day and end up voting on either popular perception (oft misguided) or the inaccurate or decieving advertising campaigns. After election day, few people seem to pay attention to what their officials are actually doing.

Sadly, I don't have the motivation, means, or time to do something like that. That, and it's not New Year's so I can't make a resolution. :P

edit: *Not necessarily just elected officials, but things that are going on locally that effect them.

This is an issue? This joke is so old, I'm sure that people were using it when John Adams was elected.

except back then, text messaging was done on leaflets dropped in public places.

Default Second life is not news...

Second Life affair ends in divorce

Ok; it's bad enough that it's another story of the virtual world playing havoc with someones perception of reality, but in the Technology section?

Come on...This is health or living. It has to do with psychology.

People have been divorcing over trivial things for as long as there was divorce. Before that, they probably resorted to murder.

It's enough that we get stories that go the long way around to make ti tie to the hot topic of the day, but this one takes the cake.

Pope: Dialogue Among Religions Should Be Pursued.
Quote:
VATICAN CITY -- Rushing to rescue Citigroup, the government agreed to shoulder hundreds of billions of possible losses at the stricken bank and to plow a fresh $20 billion into the company.
Huh... Ok maybe I should keep reading
Paragraph 2: Regulators hope...
Paragraph 3: The action, announced late Sunday...
Paragraph 4: with these transacitons, the us government...
Paragraph 5: Finally, they mention religion, the pope, remarks made, etc.
AND NO SEGUE, OR EVEN ANY INDICATIONS THIS IS THE SAME STORY.

Oh wait...the action was announced Sunday. That means it's religious, right?

Ah, that's just a technical error - several paragraphs from a different story were mistakenly inserted into the same document as this one. Not really "bad reporting," per se.

Does make for kind of an odd disconnect when reading it, though, doesn't it?

I thought that at first, but when "Vatican City" is imbedded as the location in the paragraph talking about Citigroup... I don't think it was a simple mistake.
BTW, their main page has the same headline with the same opening wording. That might be automatic, but it is another thing to question.
