What a pair of cuties!

As for sexing kittens, it can be tough even if you've had some experience with them. I once adopted a kitten who was about four weeks old; on the basis of a quick look under its tail I thought it was female.

But, when "she" had her first veterinarian visit a couple of days later, the vet found that she was a he. Fortunately I didn't have to change his name- "Squirrel" worked just as well for a boy as a girl.

If you're wondering why I would name a cat "Squirrel", it's because I already had a cat named "Moose".

And dogs named Boris and Natasha, who continually chased them?

No, but about a year later I took in a brother/sister pair of kittens, whom I did name Boris and Natasha.

They did chase Moose and Squirrel around quite a bit.

I'm a bit weird about naming pets. The list of cats who have owned me over the last 30 years:

Blob
Feedback
Moose
Near-miss (an orphan kitten who was found wandering down the center line of a highway in New Jersey)
Squirrel
Boris
Natasha

or, if they are outdoor cats, you can name them Squished and Squashed

I have a cat before when I was a kid and named her snow white since she's all white even her kittens.
But since it isn't applicable to your kittens, I have names like princess & sweetie.

Speaking of Squished & Squashed (I always thought it was Smushed & Smashed); I can hardly believe the incidence of roadkill in our area this spring. Must be the relatively mild winter and/or the increased traffic as the tentacles of urban sprawl close in and/or critters being jostled from their habitat as a result of said sprawl. The number of deer, raccoons, possoms, bunnies, turkeys, and other LDT's* is definitely up.

I tend to find most posted lists of pet names to be mainly comprised of names I wouldn't wish on another living thing--or even an inanimate thing! I don't know how many of you know the word "twee," but it's the word most posted cat name lists bring to mind.

Another quick update: I had more than a bit of a scare last night. There's a ledge along the wall of the stairwell in my home. It's seven feet above the stairs at its highest point. Apparently Kaylee (yellow) was exploring that when she fell off and landed on the landing of the stairs (thankfully not the stairs themselves!) with a single, audible thump. I'm pretty sure she's still not able to do the mid-air adjustments of an adult cat. I don't know how she landed, though. But the thump was ominous.

That was the first (and I sincerely hope the last) time I've ever heard a cat burst into tears of pain. She cried the feline equivalent of a toddler who banged its head. Absolutely heart-wrenching.

I examined her on my bed (door closed so Zoë couldn't interfere), and Kaylee accepted the gentle prodding and touching without complaint. No blood in her nose. Her eyes seemed to be focusing normally. Seemingly no damage.

She was initiating rough play with Zoë not a half-hour later. So I'd say she's fine, but man, she had me scared for a few minutes there.

Was it pain? My guess, like a human toddler, it was as much fear and alarm as actual physical pain.

I am glad that kitty and daddy are both ok.

Cats or kittens that experience "fear and alarm" tend to hide and go very very silent until they calm down. Both kittens have done it many, many times while they were learning the house. This was somewhat beyond my experience.

But yeah, Daddy's a lot less shaken than he was earlier (or last night, geez!). Talking about it with earshot of actual pet-people helps a lot.

Probably the last update: I just wanted to mark their first birthday tomorrow (31st), and post some "after" shots in case anybody's curious how they grew up. (And yes, they are getting treats tomorrow. They won't know why, but that's okay.)

Both cats are pretty mischievous, but have the same sweet and gentle dispositions they've had since birth. Zoe grew into a big and muscular amazon action cat, while Kaylee remains only about half Zoe's size, very soft and relaxed, and has one of the most gentle dispositions I've ever encountered in an adult cat.

It appears I chose their names very well, their personalities filled out almost precisely like their Firefly counterparts.

Anyway, here's a couple of recent shots.

Reward them with the "Ultimate Cat Toy". Take a standard gas-station cheapo laser pointer, and tape it to one of those cat toys on a spring. Turn on the pointer, give it a whack, and watch the cats go nuts trying to catch the dot

Seven kittens. Two adult cats. And a puppy. Then throw four adults, a pre-teen, and a toddler into the same room, and you have something akin to chaos itself.

I went down this weekend to meet the kittens and pick a pair to bring home in early June once they're weaned. I settled on these two:

I have fallback names ready (Akane' for the B&W, Ukio for the yellow tabby, both after the Ranma 1/2 characters) if I can't come up with anything better in a month, but in the mean time, I'd love some suggestions. Space or science related would be nice (though not mandatory), and keep in mind that both kittens are female. I'm also not insisting on a single theme, so pretty much anything goes.
Hi, My family had scads of cats over the years.
Some of the interesting names:
Itty ...... one of the children came up with that...stuck .
Doughnuts ....he looked the colour of a plain doughnut...
Headlights ....kind of a bunch of mottled colours in the face and body
blacky....whitey......why not Grey-ie .yup.
Velcro .....this one had the sharpest little claws as he clambored up my pants legs ....and when you pulled him off....it was like velcro.
hair-bag .....my cousin's cat .....sheds like hell...but loveable.

and my cat.....Ferocious Billeau . A billeau is french for one of those dust bunnies that that seem to roll underneath your bed. And well...a 12 pound siberian cat is ferocious enough to earn his name. Look at the bones!

Best regards, Dan

PS: there is the Indian names. For instance: "Smells like tuna fish sometimes"
or "Catching different poor creatres sometimes" or
"Scratches different things"

One of the two I adopted a few months ago is the most affectionate cat I've ever met. When I do my marathon sessions of mmo gaming, she jumps up in my lap and curls up. Or, she jumps on my chair back, rests her paws ony head and bites my hair until I acknowledge her. Funny as heck.

Lieselottel becomes lila, lilly, lulu, minky, bbcat, fiend, lotty, lotsv spots the list is endless. Kitty some how become kitzy, kit kit, floaty, cat, schupys, schnu schnu and goes on . Poppy he was called red, poppl, marmaduke, ginger, stinky, horrace (as he ate everything!!) furball , and killer as he killed everything. toy birds rats dogs cats and and fella that came near me!!! Sadly he has died so have no protector for me and the girls, the big stick is still at the door tho.
I would have called the B&W one Cfor( c for cat) or minky and the stripey tailed one, Tigs or Blue
