I can't help much with names. We haven't been too original with the six cats that own us: Mama Cat, Big Boy, Big Fat Yellow Cat, Princess MeowMeow (she acts the part too), Lucky, Little Yellow Cat. All but the first two were foundlings.
Congrats on your new kitties. May they bring you the joy mine bring me!

No sense naming them, they never come when called.

My GF recommends 'Sooty' and 'Sandy' respectively.

Oh, those two are cuties!
My current cat is offically El Diablo. He and his brother, Don Miguel, were named after an Eddie Izzard routine by a friend who names all the cats she's planning to keep (she wasn't planning to keep D and his brother) after Mercedes Lackey characters and all her ferrets after M*A*S*H characters. I like the idea of theme pet names, I guess; it makes it easier to think of 'em. However, I will not be continuing the Eddie Izzard theme when I get a new cat next.

I've heard it said that dogs will come when called, but that cats will take a message and get back to you.
Most of my cats responded to instructions as well as any other cat... when they felt like it. Even the feral responded to training (to the point she was willing to take a pill from my hand.) I train them to respond to French words. I do that to minimize confusion with ordinary conversation and because the words I use are vocally distinctive. Of course, they have to be tempermentally willing to follow your instruction. They don't take commands, after all. But they are often quite willing to consider suggestions from their people.

Hmm. I think I'm going to throw "Zoe" (B&W) and "Kaylee" (yellow) onto the pile. They're very distinctive sounds I'll be able to train the kittens to recognize individually, and sufficiently thematic (hair color) that I'll have no trouble remembering which is which. *chuckle* Besides, serenity works for me as a theme, and it's not too obviously a theme.

I find it difficult to name critters that I don't know personally. The name should be an extension of the personality.
For instance, in this house, we have a cat named Kali (because she's a calico), Jay-R (big white shepherd) Oskon (dalmation/mastif/chow mix), and Buddy (AMerican Tundra Shepherd) I named none of them. Kali was named by my youngest when we rescued her from the rain in Bremerton, WA. Megalon was about 3 at the time. Jay-R - he's a rescue. Not even a member of my family named that one. Oskon - my elder named him for a character in a book. Buddy - SAR dog - named before he even came to the group. Again, not my fault Correct names: Kali = Slug. Just lies there all day Oskon = Mudfootus Hyperactivus. His spots from the belly down are brown, and he has more energy than the local power company. Jay-R = Roadblock. Since slug was taken by the cat. Besides, Jay-R is fat, and insists that the best place to lie down is in the middle of the most traveled path from wherever you are to wherever you are going. Buddy.. ok, oddly, he's aptly named. Still, names like 'windsock' and 'Radar' come to mind. You could park a car in one of his ears (or, as one local news anchor put it "He has ears like tennis rackets!") anyway, back to the kitties: I suggest Stonewall for the B&W and Flump for the tawny - best I can do without knowing them |

so you had kittens, my naming of pets is not that good named a dog pup and a cat named cat (actually once a pair but his brother just vanished one day and could think of a pair of names).

My dad was able to call our cat, Bert (1983-2001). He would say "Where's the Kittybert?" and Bert would come running. No matter how hard I tried to imitate this it only worked for my dad.

Our cat generally comes when we call her name, but it seems to be more of a courtesey than anything else.

Ohhhhhh..... Kitties!!!! They are very cute.
My cats have always responded when called by their names, though some were more responsive than others. I had some paramedic friends that named their cats Lights and Siren. And many years ago, a programmer friend had DOS and Windows. How about Ba and Ut, for the owners of our board? Or Phil and Fraser? ![]() Selena is always a good astronomy cat name. Or Andromeda (also has SF connection).
