You'd think they'd have plenty of money, they didn't even have to allow a budget to hoax a moon-landing!

my question is.. why bother? GPS works fine. If you have sufficient processing power (and it doesn't take that much) you can place yourself within a meter or so. Adding 6 satellites won't change that..

This sounds like a great deal of pig parts in a large ovoid container.

Part of me thinks its trying to "one up" the US, or say, "Anything you can do, we can do too...sorta"

For some reason the phrase "herding cats" comes to mind.

ARTHUR: It is King Arthur, and these are my Knights of the Round Table. Whose castle is this?
FRENCH GUARD: This is the castle of my master, Guy de Loimbard.
ARTHUR: Go and tell your master that we have been charged by God with a sacred quest. If he will give us food and shelter for the night, he can join us in our quest for the Holy Grail.
FRENCH GUARD: Well, I'll ask him, but I don't think he'll be very keen. Uh, he's already got one, you see.
ARTHUR: What?
GALAHAD: He says they've already got one!
ARTHUR: Are you sure he's got one?
FRENCH GUARD: Oh, yes. It's very nice-a. (I told him we already got one.)
FRENCH GUARDS: [chuckling]
ARTHUR: Well, u-- um, can we come up and have a look?
FRENCH GUARD: Of course not! You are English types-a!
ARTHUR: Well, what are you, then?
FRENCH GUARD: I'm French! Why do think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king-a?!
GALAHAD: What are you doing in England?
FRENCH GUARD: Mind your own business!
ARTHUR: If you will not show us the Grail, we shall take your castle by force!
FRENCH GUARD: You don't frighten us, English pig-dogs! Go and boil your
bottom, sons of a silly person. I blow my nose at you, so-called Arthur
King, you and all your silly English k-nnnnniggets. Thpppppt! Thppt!
Thppt!
GALAHAD: What a strange person.

So far, there's four systems of which I'm aware that do precisely the same thing.

Why? What bragging rights could the EU, Russia, and Asia hope to gain by very expensively attempting to duplicate GPS, which was born of, and funded by Cold War expenditures which are no longer available, even to the US?

That's just pride and prejudice hanging on, when instead, we should be examining both cost-spreading as well as targeting various needs for the system throughout the world. Only this is cooperation.

Anything else is like trying to send bottle rockets to the Moon on Jan 1, 1970. It's a self-deceptive attempt to retain face while throwing what little is left in a country's coffers much like encouraging a bloodhound to run down a grayhound.

Please grow up a bit, peoples of the world, and let things go. Instead, let's begin doing a bit more cooperating so as to help all of us meet all of our needs.

Thanks.

- Mugs.

I've been wondering about that myself. Perhaps "parochialism" might be the word Doodler was searching for? If so he could ask a moderator to change the thread title.

I'm a little rusty on my Bible study, for obvious reasons, but the idea was a metaphor for the Tower of Babel construction project.

Lotsa participants, not a lot of effective communication.

What if the U.S. decides, for whatever reasons, to deny them access or charge exorbitant rates to use it? You can bet the U.S. would duplicate it if they were not already the original developers/owners, IMO.

If the point was failure to communicate...you certainly succeeded
