Looks like a possible candidate for Neverfly's Dr. Pepper fan club...

Student educates himself, loses 180 pounds
Quote:
"I wasn't educated about how to eat right or how to lose weight," Hollas recalled. "I read all about nutrition, how to change meals to make them [healthier]."
Can somebody tell me how this can happen in the first place. Has the U.S. Education system completely dropped all health education from thier curriculum?

My guess is he either never listened or gave a rats...

Well, perhapse we're a skewed segment of the population when it comes to education... but I've always wondered how anyone can claim to not know that unhealthy foods are, well, unhealthy.

I think it's just like everything else; no body takes responsability for anything. Everything is always someone else's fault.

Small earthquake shakes Missouri
Quote:
Residents are waking up to an earthquake in St. Louis County, Mo.
There are no reports of damage from the early morning temblor.
Are?
Just how long is this earthquake gonna last?

Ancient Egyptian Necklace Stolen From Dayton Museum

A few of the carnelian beads fell off the necklace, but the majority of the rest are missing.
Huh?

Ah, so some of the beads that didn't fall off the necklace are not missing--just follow the string to find the rest!!!!!!

Gee, talk about a strange excuse... I didn't throw it out, I just stored it in the garbage?

Trashed Mexican Flag Angers Student

The teacher denied tossing the flag in the trash but said he did take the flag and place it in a garbage can because that was the only place he could find to keep it.
Besides; what was the problem to begin with?

sounds like a Dilbert cartoon--I think it was Wally who told a new employee that the trash can was a good place to store important documents.

Well, after this headline, I think my fear of the ocean is worse than ever.

"Swimmer pokes shark in eye to escape mauling."

Prior to today, I assumed maulings could only occur from things with limbs...typically with big claws at the end. Then I realized...maybe "Tiger Sharks" didn't just get their name from their coloring...

I wanted to grab a screenshot of the headline. I've also included an artists rendition of the creature in question.

Scarey!

I'm not sure where you get that. I thought the root of mauling was from the tool called a maul. That tells me it was a hammerhead.

Now I'm ashamed that I didn't think of that, since I knew a maul was a hammer-like tool.

Package sizes getting smaller instead of raising the prices.
Yep; we all know they do it, but it's still good for an article to show how widespread it is. It might even be good as a reminder to compare prices and sizes rather than just price and assume the sizes are the same.

But; we can't leave the article without some duhs and uhs...
Food makers: Higher prices and smaller product portions

Quote:
We found Eddy's new 1.5 quart size side-by-side with its predecessor, the 1.75 quart size, on a store shelf in Melville, and we were charged the same price for both.
Eddy's told us what we found was the old inventory still for sale.
Obviously...that's the point of the whole article.

Quote:
And in a similar vein, inspectors came across two different sizes of act anti-cavity mouthwash and did the math the small version says, use once a day. The larger version says, use twice a day.
...
The makers of Act mouthwash explained their fluoride dosage as an FDA regulation, saying they are restricted to a certain quantity of fluoride in the larger size bottles.
Quantity restriction? Not concentration?

And explain the logic of saving money if the end result is that the consumer will actually be using less.

Both H.E.B. and Wal-Mart here list the cost per oz already calculated (If they calculated it correctly) next to the unit price on each tag.

Yes; lot's of stores do (at least around here). But; what they are counting on are the people that don't dive too deep or don't make that quick of a connection.
They might look at $0.11/oz vs $0.12/oz and see a penny change and not care. They don't make the connection to the size and not realize the approx. 1 gal jug is really saving them a dollar.

Admit it! You text and drive
Quote:
A whopping 40% of drivers under 30% admit they have come close to or have gotten into an accident.
12% ?

Assuming that second % symbol isn't supposed to be there, I'm still confused by that sentence in regards to the article's first sentence:

Quote:
A new study shows 40% of Americans under the age of 30 text while driving.
The percentage who text while driving and the percentage who say they've "come close to or have gotten into an accident" are the same?

Call me an old [fogey], but I do not text. Not while driving nor otherwise.

The only time my brother texts is to tell the high school kid that they've got the wrong number!

Texting while driving!? I have a hard enough time texting while sitting in a chair in my office. Poor eyesight and poorly-trained fingers.
