There are companies that offer to write stuff inside diamonds for you. It's supposed to be romantic.

LOVERBOY: Darling, I have decided to give you this diamond with a love poem inscribed inside it because I care more about my narcissic feelings for you than rational captial accumulation or charity.

Carve it in cast basalt. Cheap and durable.

If I have to do something special like that to have my words last a long time, they're not worth reading.

Homer wrote on wax and papyrus
Shakespear wrote on parchment
Hemmingway wrote on that stuff you find in the outhouse.

The permapaper does not absorb fluids, so it is quite waterproof and stainproof. The hollow fullerene fibers lower the density to the point that a book of permapaper will float on water and not sink to the bottom.
So; what ink do you use?

Wouldn't it be more efficient (and cheaper) to just create a backup in some "normal" media?

Heck, you could create hundreds of them, and lose a few, and send them to your friends, even your enemies, and still be fine.

I think a laser changes the molecular structure of the "paper" to show letters. I saw it on Daily Planet on Canada's discovery channel.

Didn't impress me in the slightest. It's hard to get people here even to recycle regular paper let alone make the extra effort to to use this stuff.

A Native American perspective:
Quote:
...anthropologists wonder how our ancestors could have put the pictographs in the stone when we didn't have iron or metal...the Earth was still warm. The rocks today were mud back then, and our ancestors would carve with their fingers and sticks.
...The Cherokee and other tribes have written records from ancient times that were preserved and hidden away...into sacred caves and then sealed them, such as the one under the Sphinx in Egypt...
