The other day, I dreamed I was talking to a friend on the phone, one who's very shy and whom I don't speak to very often. My actual phone rang, waking me up just enough to realize that it was ringing--and I felt guilty for interrupting the conversation in my dream to wake up and answer my real phone.

Then there are those of us who used to do chemical-based photography.

One of the best dream descriptions I've ever read was in the Updike book called Couples. It had to do with the protagonist trying to fall asleep and experiencing all sorts of weird stuff at the edge of consciousness.

For me when I do get to sleep for a few hours, the subject matter is invariably ancient, with scenes from 50+ years ago inhabited by people long dead. I guess that's what happens when you get to be an old...person.

Here's a variation on the "thought I went to work naked" dream I experienced once...
I had a dream like that , "naked", actually not at work , but walking somewhere, or something is running after me and I'm naked .. weird..

And there's one thing ..

Have you had a dream that you woke up late and you have to be in hurry because you're very late for work .. and suddenly , you really woke up rushing yourself to go to work and then you realized ... it's Sunday!

I have experienced that. I decided to go back to sleep but .. I cant anymore because I'm wide awake already.

I had a "naked" dream one time where I was arrested on Rodeo Drive not for being nude, but instead for violating an obscure California law that made it a crime to offend the beautiful people.

I have had several of those sort of dreams over the past few years - the last one was probably only about 3 weeks ago.

The first thing you notice is that the 2nd level dream is all weird and fantastic like many normal dreams but the 1st level dream (the one you dream you wake up into is all perfectly normal or at least seemingly plausable).

It is interesting that you talk about alarm clocks because mine are largely the same, they all seem to be time/deadline related. In other words you think you have woken up late and are going to be late for work, when in fact when you really wake up you have plenty of time to spare like normal. Or you dream that some critical project work deadline has passed and you have not go things ready when in reality you have days to spare.

Someone said earlier on about having dreams like this as an adult. Perhaps it is only because as adults we tend to live with these sort time related pressures on a regular basis that our minds will dream these sorts of scenarios.

or more common for me is that I plan to wake up early. My brain wakes me up really early, and I rush to shower and the likes only to realize I woke up at 4AM and not 7AM. Now I've got 3 hours to think it over.
