The available medical care's bad. Everything else about the city is great--especially that Graham likes it here; for obvious reasons, I'm not leaving him just for better meds. And again, this isn't just an Olympia problem. This is a national problem; it just happens to be worse here because it's a smaller town.

Aye!!!
I knew a physicist who was getting a doctorates in it. He couldn't balance his check book or get a girlfriend, but he was conviced he was God and better than everyone else on the planet. That said, there's arrogance in every field. Every office. Everywhere. We should take pitty on those who are arrogant. They are fools who let their egos control them. If they should fall, they'll hit the hardest.

Arrogance is a complicated thing...
I think in some cases it comes from overconfidence - in which case anyone can have it, at any stage of their career. I think in most cases it comes from ego. I've encountered a couple of insufferably arrogant astrophysicists and geophysicists, and they're like that because they really do think they know everything and nobody else has the right to prove them wrong or even to butt in on things that they might know. You can usually tell that type because they never admit they're wrong and never apologise for anything. In some cases it can come from misinterpretation - a lot of laypeople think scientists are "arrogant" just for telling them how things actually work. And in several cases, especially in the sciences, I think it comes from scientists just being so detached from everyone else that they just don't even realise that they're coming across as asses. |

Must we start this idiotic discussion up AGAIN?????
<inappropriate content removed by moderator> Note to Paracelsus - do not post inappropriate words on this site. This is your one freebie - not an official warning this time.

Careful, Paracelsus.
I'd hate to see someone as nice as you get into trouble with the mods. Must have been a PWI. Meanwhile, here's an example of "Arrogance in psueoscientific disciplines" (although I'm stretching the definition of "discipline" to its limit..and beyond). Just read the bulk of the tree's posts.

This was the thread I asked the mods/BA about adding that coda to the first post. I fervently wish I'd never started this thread at all. I know I shouldn't take this kind of thing personally, but it is hard not to. I don't mind the discussion about lousy doctors, etc; I just wish the whole 'arrogance' angle would quietly go away. ![]() I realize that I got myself into this whole thing, but how many times am I going to have to apologize for this thread???

I know what you're getting at.
I guess the best thing is just to consider it a child who has now a life of her own, and let her go. You can't be nor consider yourself to be responsible for all that happens in this thread. Hey, let's talk astronomy.

You're a sweetheart! Thanks, man.
![]() Added: I didn't think I was PWI, but I just realized that I couldn't remember brushing my teeth this morning--even though my mouth feels like I have. I haven't drunk anything alcoholic since last night, and ethanol has zero-order elimination kinetics. I didn't drink that much either, so it has to be out of my system by now... Yikes! ![]()

![]() I suspect that this will be a long-lived thread, unfortunately. In any event, I'll post this again: See my posts (#'s 159 and 123 on this thread) for my final thoughts on this subject.

hhEb09'1, those two links don't go back to post #'s 159 or 123. I clicked on them and didn't get the right posts.

I just copied the permalink links from the upper right hand corner (BTW, the permalink thing seems to be the worst idea ever )PS: and I think I see the problem. The page number is included in the permalink--so if your page setting is different than mine, you will go to a page that may not contain that particular post. It's still possible to construct that sort of link by hand, using the template http ://www.bautforum.com/ showthread.php?p=PPPPPPP#postPPPPPPP So for the two posts #159 (post 1018315) and #123 (post 1007023): http://www.bautforum.com/showthread....15#post1018315 http://www.bautforum.com/showthread....23#post1007023 Do those work for you? |
|
||||
|
Yup, those worked. I'll have to remember that algorithm in your post for future reference.
