Talking Happy (Early) Birthday to Me!

I went on a buying binge in Barnes&Nobles today and bought the following:

1) Probability Demystified: A self-teaching guide. (for hubby as he is reviewing statistics)
2) Nanotechnology Demystified: A self-teaching guide.
3) Mathematics of Classical and Quantum Physics. F.W. Byron, Jr. and R.W. Fuller (as an adjunct to my old textbooks and class notes).
4) The Hazards of Space Travel: A tourist's guide. N. F. Comins (looked ULTRA-cool)
5) The Chilling Stars: A new theory of climate change. H. Svensmark & N. Calder (my ATM read of the month!)
6) The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, time, and the texture of reality. Brian Greene (cool read #2)
7) Extinction: How life on earth nearly ended 250 million years ago. D. H. Erwin (cool read #3)

Total cost: $154.00.

Ka-ching!!

I've gone on buying binges like that too. They usually start with "Oh, I just have to go get one thing..."

Lunar Rendezvous Day! Okay!!

You should know that the entire Clear Lake community will be celebrating your b'day, even if they don't know it. We'll choose a Queen and have a party in the park with food and games. You should come.

Your book list is intimidating. My last book purchase included a box of crayons so I could color the pictures. But I did stay inside the lines... mostly.

If you did, I've this whistle that will indicate you went out of bounds.

I've always thought of July 20th as Moon Day or We're Finally Off The Earth Day.

Paracelsus
: Nice selection of books. Looks like a group I might pick on a similar "binge"!

BTW, have you ever heard Arcana by Varèse?

We have similar taste in books then--cool!

Never heard of Arcana...what is it about?

Also, I am into Ch. 2 of Extinction, and it is a most excellent book. It is general enough for a non-paleontologist like me; but it doesn't talk down to the reader, over-simplify, or gloss over fine points of disagreement. I highly recommend it and will start a thread about the subject of the book when I'm done (end Permian extinction--causes). The subject of the book is very relevant to the issue of global warming.

Jim: Cool! Wish I could come...Might be in NC seeing my Dad, though.

From the score's title page (imagine this spoken by Rod Serling):
Quote:
One star exists, higher than all the rest. This is the apocalyptic star. The second star is that of the ascendant. The third is that of the elements - of these there are four, so that six stars are established. Besides these there is still another star, imagination, which begets a new star and a new heaven.

Hermetic Philosophy
-Paracelsus
Here's an American Symphony orchestra program note about it.

For me, it's about energy, effort, and inquiry, and the magnificence that such endeavors may bring about.
