Since the incident happened before 5 AM, I doubt it interfered with airport operations. Still, to have a bunch of snake eaters miss the DZ by 3 miles is pretty embarrassing, especially in this age of GPS. Either the winds were way wrong or someone has some explaining to do.

The article didn't say if they were making a low altitude static line jump or a HALO jump. If it was a static line jump, then the plane's crew and the jumpmaster screwed the pooch. (Been there, done that on the jumping end). If it was a HALO jump, someone in the group of jumpers must have misread the landmarks. According to this source, Fremont County airport leaves their lights on at night and also has a rotating beacon. Unless the lights were out or the winds were very high, it's hard to see how they could miss the airport. Some small airports require you to tune to the local frequency and click your mike a few times to turn on the lights. Perhaps that's the case at Fremont.

Oh, yeah! I remember hearing a plane turn north last Thursday about 2 in the morning. I was wondering about that.
