Default Wrong turn at Albuquerque?

I thought this was worth a laugh (since it turned out much better than it could have).

Prison tries to unravel invasion of mystery troops

Quote:
Military officials said 25 heavily armed parachutists who landed in a cornfield on the grounds of a Colorado prison last week were on a training mission but landed about 3 miles off target.
I'm just glad the prison guards excersized a little more restraint than I probably would have if I had seen "heavily armed" men fall into a prison which I was guarding.

Since it appears to be currently operational, one wonders what the reaction at the Fremont County Airport (the group's missed target) would have been?

OK, son, those are the basic instruments you need to know in this Cessna, now it's time to get lined up for our landing approach, and...wave to the nice paratrooper who's just outside your window!

Dang, I should have called the thread, "It's raining men!" (homer's favorite jukebox song at moes, at least in one episode).

Since the incident happened before 5 AM, I doubt it interfered with airport operations. Still, to have a bunch of snake eaters miss the DZ by 3 miles is pretty embarrassing, especially in this age of GPS. Either the winds were way wrong or someone has some explaining to do.

The article didn't say if they were making a low altitude static line jump or a HALO jump. If it was a static line jump, then the plane's crew and the jumpmaster screwed the pooch. (Been there, done that on the jumping end). If it was a HALO jump, someone in the group of jumpers must have misread the landmarks. According to this source, Fremont County airport leaves their lights on at night and also has a rotating beacon. Unless the lights were out or the winds were very high, it's hard to see how they could miss the airport. Some small airports require you to tune to the local frequency and click your mike a few times to turn on the lights. Perhaps that's the case at Fremont.

Oh, yeah! I remember hearing a plane turn north last Thursday about 2 in the morning. I was wondering about that.

Hey, how about that, another one.

Firefighters Tear Down Wrong House

Quote:
NewsCenter 5's Rhondella Richardson reported that a Braintree family invited the fire department to conduct a training exercise at their home that was slated to be torn down. But instead of going to 6 Harrison Ave., firefighters ended up a few blocks away at 30 Coolidge Ave.
Quote:
The firefighters were practicing ventilating burning buildings by tearing holes in the roof.
Ooops.

Well, those non-burning buildings all look the same.

Technology cannot impede the rite of passage known as the utter screwup.

Everyone will go through them, and despite the best of intentions, completeness of information and strictess of guidance, people just plain miss the mark.

Can inanimate objects make wrong turns?

Patriot Missile found in Fla. Scrap Yard

Quote:
TAMPA, Fla. -- A Patriot missile with its guidance system and rocket motor was found in a Tampa scrap metal yard, according to authorities. Explosives experts at MacDill Air Force Base were called to the scrap yard on July 11 to identify an odd-looking object in a heap of junk.
No, there was no warhead on it. Could have been a great find for some backyard rocket hobbyist though.
