Where in the central part of The State of Maine? Central always makes me think of Dover-Foxcroft. I spent a lot of time in Bridgton, North Windham, and Weld during the 50s and 60s. Sugarloaf is my favorite lift-serviced place to ski in the East.

So I guess it's common for Mainer's to pronounce the town named "Calais" as "callous?" It kind of threw me the first time I heard it said by someone from Maine.

Is it a sort of "We don't speak French here" statement?

Yes, they laughed at Einstein, but only because of his silly hairstyle; no one was actually laughing at his science.

That is how it is said, do not know the reason probably just starting to get mispronounced and stayed that way.

That seems pretty common in the US. For example the town of Milan, Ohio is pronounced My-Lan. They looked at me funny when I said it as they would in Italy.

The river that runs between Maine in New Brunswick is the St Croix, the x is not pronounced in french or by anybody here.
