Default OMG... a blimp!

How many people do you know that don't know what a blimp looks like?
Apparently, quite a few in Boston.
Residents Scared By Low-Flying Blimp

But; there was an interesting "up from the trees" shot of it in the video that made it a little strange. Although; I would think that it would have been obvious by the time they got to the phone to dial 911.

And I thought this was an Ohio Phenomenom that I discussed a few years ago... A few years ago

They said they got lots of calls because it was flying so low, not because people thought it was something else. Only "some" of the callers didn't know what it was.

It's clearly a UFO that has corporate sponsorship, which I find very disturbing. Is nothing sacred? Must we have advertising everywhere?

Yep; I think it's the "some" that stuck in my mind after watching it... but; even "some" can be a little disconcerting.

I thought the "leaked helium" was a nice touch to the story. It was calm enough that it didn't sound alarmist, but would be to someone who isn't sure of the dangers of helium.

That's horrible to link to - it just plays a second of the video then goes to a lengthy "buffering" message.

I remember in 1986 my puppy dog Emmy was out in the garden when she suddenly had a fit of barking. I went out to investigate and saw she was looking up. There was an airship* passing over my house, not that much higher than the house.

*I prefer the term "airship" as it has connotations of grandeur, empire days, Michael Moorcock's Oswald Bastable stories, His Dark Materials and so on. Whereas "blimp" sounds like an abusive term for the fat boy in Animal House or something.

It must be taking the slow boat across the pond... Works fine here, but I have had issues with that particular site in the past.

Exactly the reason that the word "Blimp" works so well for these over-inflated advertising balloons.

Sweet. One of these in every city, and -- once the word finally gets out -- it's the end of UFO reports. Everyone will know that odd light in the sky is just the blimp.

"Oh my... Look, just over the treetops... It's a giant alien eyeball looking at us! Run!"
"Relax, George. It's just the blimp."

Hate to break it to you, Pilgrim, but this isn't exactly a new thing.

Try 1925 as the first year GoodYear put it's logo on it's own blimp.

And please don't be offended by calling you Pilgrim - that was actually the name of GoodYear's 1925 blimp.

I don't know. I've always found The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp to be a wonderful and moving picture.

Yes, but... that's just a blimp. I expect logos on blimps, of course. I just didn't realize the ETs had sold out. What's next, a Nike swoosh in Bigfoot's fur?

From an "That 70s Show" episode:

Leo: "I saw a UFO once. It was awesome."

"What did it look like?"

Leo: "It was this really big gray thing. It was just hanging there."

"Did it do anything?"

Leo: "It sent me a message. It said I was going to have a good year."

"Were you at a football game when this happened?"

Leo: "Yeah, man! How did you know?"

Ok; Is it just me because I am too familiar with the GoodYear blimp, or does this not sound like a story...

Weather strands the Goodyear Blimp
Quote:
"We're going to be covering the NASCAR race coming up this weekend, and because of the winds, we couldn't make it all the way to our destination--so we had to kind of stop short here in Quincy," said Pilot Greg Poppenhouse. "If we tried to make it all the way to Kansas City today from Springfield, Illinois, it was going to take us 16 hours."
Obviously the video was taken by a station local to quincy, because it starts off...
"If you thought you saw the blimp hovering [...] you're right"

IF the blimp pilot is flying at night with the engines turned down low (stupid, but I've seen it happen with the blimp based down here in Pompano Beach FL) and he's at the right angle for the lights to look strange, yes it can look like a UFO.

....then again, you're right and a lot of people don't know what a blimp is...
