Please express the "loudness" in terms of decibels at three feet.

Meanwhile one thing I've always enjoyed since my childhood (and thanked my parents for, since it's apparently hereditary) is sneezing fits.

This is where I will begin uncontrollable sneezing that lasts anywhere from five minutes to a half an hour or more. There's no predicting when they will start (was really great when I was conducting a meeting or giving a presentation), although sometimes a bright light will kick them off.

In fact, when I used to commute such that I had to drive east in the AM and west in the PM, the Sun would apparently be a trigger.

The severity was such that, in those cases, I'd have to pull over before losing control of my car or call a break during the meeting/presentation.

Currently, they cause interesting hemorrhaging of the various blood vessels in the head and lungs, leading to copious blood loss.

Just part of being alive, I guess.

I really let them rip.

With a long history of sinus problems and allergies, I sneeze more than the average bear. I used to suppress them, or muffle as much as possible; but developing neck issues changed that. Really zinged some neerves in my neck trying to suppress. So now I just courteously turn away from any nearby humans and let it go full force.

Also, I was told you can do some minor damage trying to choke them back.

p.s. - I really like the Hemingway quote.

Is that why I got a massive nosebleed after sneezing the other time?

----

My best friend and I encountered an interesting problem with sneezing none has addressed yet (to the best of my knowledge). She get's sneezing fits a lot and I usually said 'bless you', as you do. After a while she got all huffy with me because she didn't like having an affinity to a certain god implied about her. So now the response has become 'may the nebulous deity bless you'

----

As for the OP, I suppose sometimes they're loud but I'm kind of too busy sneezing (or trying not to drop/break anything I'm holding/doing at the time) to notice the volume

I've known lots of people who's sneezes are triggered this way. Me included.

Luckily, one or two, and I'm done. That's got to be irritating.

At least Mythbusters showed it doesn't lead to eyeballs popping out.

I wonder if the vessels are pumped to a higher pressure for the sneeze so they can squeeze more fluids where they need to go.

And the bless you thing...I've always been cautious of my audience on that one. There's not much non-religious alternative except for geshundheit.

I didn't smoke that many cigars when I was a kid, but the sneezing fits were just as intense as they are now.

Probably a result of watching Groucho Marx too often during the 1950s: the movies and the TV show You Bet Your Life.

You held meetings in your car while you were driving?

This sounds like one of those Edward de Bono "po" things.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Incidentally, I sneeze very loudly, but it's not a problem. Not to me, anyway.

My wife blames the cracks in our home's foundation on my sneezing.

I wonder why most of the men sneezes loudly that the whole household can hear ?

I sneeze a lot too, I have a sensitive nose that it triggers to sneeze whenever its irritated with something.

We can always covers our nose and mouth to suppress the sneeze from doing it loudly and just sneeze quietly ...

Just my womanly comment.

My wife's complained about hearing loss from being too close when I sneeze. The dog's gone into hiding a time or two, and when we had cats, the first time I sneezed around them, they didn't reappear for an hour. One lady at work had ... delicate I guess would be the word, sneezes. "A-chii", really quite and high-pitched. Back in high school, one guy in band would get rapid-fire sneezes that would last for a minute or two.

It's the washboard abs, Ma'am. Powerful.

At least that's what I keep telling myself - haven't exactly seen much of them in a few years...

My dad used to give this horrendously loud sneezes
It compelled me to be quiet when I sneeze.
To me, a loud sneeze isnt really necessary and seems to be a cry for attention

" Look, I'm spewing snot all over!"
