Checking in with Los Angeles' The Advocate can be somewhat revealing.

One thing about the Craig case, to show my ignorance. I'm not in the US so probably don't get all the news. But my own presumption has always been that US senators travel with staff, and don't just go into airport bathrooms without anybody knowing about it. Can a senator really do something anonymously like that? And the other thing is, what was he doing in Minneapolis? He is from Idaho, right? Has there been discussion of why he was there in the first place? It would seem fairly ridiculous for a senator living between Washington DC and Idaho to travel to Minneapolis just for a sexual encounter.

No, senators don't necessarily have staff traveling with them. They might certainly not have staff traveling with them into a restroom.

He was probably changing planes in Minneapolis. It's a major hub, and it's a long distance between Washington DC and Idaho.

Yes to anonymous. I doubt even one out of a thousand people in Minneapolis would recognize the senator from Idaho. It could be a rare opportunity for him to enjoy his hobby.

I wonder if they have a club in Washington for that hobby

It's probably mostly composed of reporters hoping to expose a senator.

We generally have a distate for legislators acting hifalutin' -- they're supposed to be "regular people". We'll tolerate high executive officials acting like royalty to some extent, but people don't like members of Congress nor their state legislators acting "big". And so a US senator (except if there was some real need for security) is expected, on personal business, such as coming and going home, to do it just like an ordinary citizen would.

The president, however, would not be expected to be anywhere without a phalanx of security and staff. Heck, they'd send an advance team to build his own restroom along the way if they had to. However, if he wanted to, he could order the Secret Service to take a hike and go out by himself. They'd go nuts and would probably try to shadow him, but as far as I know, there is no law nor requirement that would prevent the president from telling everyone to take a hike and going somewhere incognito. I mean, he's the boss. It would be a very irresponsible thing to do, of course, but he could very well do it.

As far as we know, that has hasn't happened in recent memory, but there are stories about presidents doing exactly that in the past from time to time. JFK is one they say pulled that stunt a few times, and I'm sure you know why. During Watergate, I think Nixon would go off by himself.

Yeah, there is. Its a Congressional mandate that the Secret Service protect the President. There might not be anyone immediately around him, but you can bet your backside there's at least three snipers and a buncha guys with automatic weapons securing a perimeter.

When I first heard of the story, it sure sounded like he was caught in the act, but when additional information comes out, especially the taped interview with the cop, I'm not so sure. I never knew anything about these non-verbal signals, and I'm sure the vast majority of straight men didn't either. I'm not sure how you can be arrested for tapping your foot. The fact that Craig pleaded guilty is perplexing. You can see his motivation for not wanting people to know about the arrest, but I can't imagine any lawyer of his suggesting that he plead guilty in that situation unless he really were guilty. He had to know that sooner or later word would get out, so I guess that he probably was soliciting but I'm not certain of it.

Does anyone have an actual source as to what he plead guilty to? This mornings news said the actual charge was Disorderly Conduct. That would be easy to explain away without getting into sexuality at all.

Unofficial word is that he will announce his resignation tomorrow.

I could cry, I tell you. Cry. Another good man, done in my merciless cops and hounding media.

Not to mention the members of his own party, who seem a bit less forgiving than Yaweh heading down the road to Sodom.

I wonder why? It's not like he drove off a bridge and killed a campaign worker and didn't report the accident for hours, or he shot someone in his hunting party and did not report that to the authorities for 14 hours, is it?

i just skimmed thru this thread, so i don't know if this stuff has been covered..
but..
i guess the restroom that this happened in is well known as a great place to go "cruising" for a good time. people from all over the world that are into this kind of things make it a part of their vacation itinerary if they are passing thru town.
that, and it was nowhere near where his incoming flight came in or where his connecting flight was leaving. he went a ways out of his way just to go to that particular restroom.
those two points right there kind of point towards a "guilty" verdict in my mind.
that, and has anyone seen what he said about Bill Clinton back in '99?
he said he was a "bad, bad, naughty, dirty little boy".. not that those particular words make a person gay- they were, after all, pretty much true- but it's the way he said it. almost as if he wanted to personally spank Billy for beign a bad boy. look it up on Youtube and see if i'm crazy..
and, just for the record- i've got no problem with gay people or their lifestyle. i have a few very good friends that are gay. but none of them- as far as i know- do things like this. well, maybe one of them. but i have made it clear that i want to know nothing about what he does in his personal time- and i tell all my straight acquaintances the same thing.
in fact, only one of them looks or acts in a way that might be seen as stereotypically gay. the rest are greasy redneck dirtball car mechanics.
of course, none of them are Republicans, and the public stances of people like this guy are one of the reasons why, with the utter hypocrisy of getting caught doing things they say they hate so much being just the icing on the cake.....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Bad Boy Billy!.

Yeah I was giving the good senator the benefit of the doubt, 'til I heard the arrest tape and read the police report.
He was out cruising alright...

And in all fairness:

I didn't get a homosexual impression of it, so much as a "They are slapping him on the wrist as if to say 'Naughty boy!"

As in Clinton was getting away with it.

I think folks are reading too much into that..

He is being guilty of being a first degree cliché.

Another firebrand family-values conservative caught getting it on with another man? If they keep this up I might have to stop laughing my head off every time it happens. Seriously, are any of these gay-bashing politicians actually hetero?

Perhaps more people will begin to recognize that the use of such issues in political discourse is a convenient way to avoid addressing questions of real substance.

Wow, was that a flying pig?

I will studiously avoid the 'H' word, and don't know much about tree rot, but just note that it is hard to capture the center of the distribution by appealing to the outliers.
