The Beer Hunter is dead. Long live the Beer Hunter!
Quote:
Michael Jackson, a leading world beer critic who praised the brews of Belgium and acknowledged he would never be as famous as "that Michael Jackson," has died. He was 65. Jackson, known as "the beer hunter," died Thursday of a heart attack at his home in west London. His body was found by his house cleaner, Paddy Gunningham, his long-term partner, said Friday.
I will raise a glass of fine ale to his memory this evening.

I don't like beer that much, but I'll raise a glass of wine to his memory.

Sad news for the passing of a gentleman who shared with us a view towards some extraordinary beers and ales of excellent quality and uniqueness that were not well known to a next generation . This one now is enjoying ales as well, and we shall have perhaps enjoyed those great programs because of his efforts. They touch so many different peoples, and yet all enjoy a fine pint. Indeed many pints will honour and remember a gentleman who showed us a little more about a good pint, and was happy.
Best regards all,
Dan

England has no good beers. And neither does Scotland. For good beers we must go to either Ireland (Guiness) or Mexico (Corona). As for spirits, Russia is obviously the place (Smirnoff), but let's not overlook Trinidad and Tobago (Royal Oak rum) or even Wales (Morgans).

What about Kutskova and Stolichnaya from Russia and Cruzan rum from St. Croix?

Beer is now a global product. Three companies control 95% of the market.

They are all equal.

Yep, all equally bad

All the best beers are brewed by small local, independant, breweries - of which Britain has plenty (and there's a good few up in the Scottish Highlands these days too, I'm pleased to say)

Personal favourite is Butcombe - brewed just outside Bristol

Which three?

I'll bet Anhieser-Busch is one of them...

Cool

What is the chance of getting a research grant to study which scientifically is the best beer and even which one most approximates the shape of known space?

Space, yes really it is all in the foam story hear hear, hic here:-

Beer foam is a microstructure with complex interfaces.

In other words, it is a cellular structure comprising networks of gas-filled bubbles separated by liquid.
Takers?

Hi, Good idea about that research grant concerning the investigation of the
relative qualities of brew. Of course, many of us feel qualified to review so many beers and ales.
"I imagine that in 30 years or so, we could compile a complete report, given funding. ..."
Best regards, Dan

Get thee behind me Satan. British ales are the finest in the world!

Not true. I'd pay for a Harp over drinking a free Bud.

Not everything you can get on draught is beer, you know. Stout, lager, etc, are quite different.

Also, for spirits, we have this thing around here called single malt whisky which I believe enjoys a good global reputation.

Guinness? you mean that bland flavourless Porter that pretends to be a stout?

hhm! try the Scottosh 'Dark Isle' Youngs 'Double Chocolate' (refering to the dark roast of the malt it doesn't have chocolate in it) or 'Oyster Stout' from Kent.

All knock Guinness into a hat.

As for bitter try anything by Tmothy taylors 'Landlord' badger brewery 'Golden Glory', Durham 'Magus' Theakstons 'Old peculiar', Camerons 'Strongarm', Adnams 'Broadside', Sam Smiths 'Old Brewery'. Anything by the Black Sheep Brewery, Anything by Marstons or Hop back, anything by Wychwood. Then we have Deuchars 'Caledonian IPA'.

I could go on, all are regularly available in a good real Ale pub or bottled from a good Supermarket these days.
