Default I am so miserable

Ack! School has only been in session for a couple of weeks and I have already caught a cold. My nose is stopped up, I've got a low grade fever and I am extremely irritable! I took some night time cold medicine and was able to sleep a bit last night but during the day...

Any suggestions on how to get through the next few days so that I don't terrorize my students. How do you fight an awful cold?

Isn't that your job? I know I can't wait to become a GTA and get a freshman class to terrify ... err, I mean to teach.

I sleep on the couch when I've got sinus issues. It's a big comfy thing with well padded armrests. So I can sleep in a nearly sitting-up position and be comfortable. Keeps the nasal passage clear and I can get a better night sleep than the eternal toss for an hour to only check the clock and see that 5 minutes have passed.

If I had one, and was without my home-brewed version, I'd head for the nearest nutritional supplements' store/aisle for a bottle of colloidal silver. Then I'd proceed to drink, snort, nebulize and gargle with it; flooding my system as thoroughly as possible.
But that's just me!

That way, I suppose, she could have a cold and start singing, "I'm so blue . . ." and mean it, literally.

Its in times of sickness that you appreciate the value of good health.

Its in times of sickness that you wish you could pack a punch on your face so hard you would pass out and forget about the pain.

Eat chiles,lots of 'em.

No,really, the capsicum clears your sinuses & the vitamin C & potassium are good for a cold.

Of course if you're not used to 'em,you may get...a variation of heartburn...but a little lower

Lots of fluids, lots of rest, and lots of complaining. (And yeah, sarongsong, isn't that the equivalent of people taking antibiotics for colds--ie, something intended to fight something other than what's causing it? Leaving aside the snake-oil aspect.)

Agreed.

That's one component of my double-barreled anti-cold weapon.

The other is to go for a long run (or series of runs). The effect on your body will be two-fold: your immune system will get beefed up and there will be an increase in endorphin production.

Kind of like wolfing down a few habaneros.

Hope you feel better soon!

Alternatively I've found that Mushroom or Celery soup does it for vegetarians

I can do the peppers - part of my normal diet. Have taken some extra vitamins already. I tend to let myself run the fever; I think it helps kill the viruses. And the complaining I have down pat!

The run is out of the question. I don't run when I am healthy - I do do water aerobics and yoga, but not when I feel this bad. If I walk in with this mess I have now, they'd throw me out. Other teachers are avoiding me like I've got the plague.

I think there have been some studies showing that chicken soup has some useful ingredients, plus the warm vapors are gentle on your nose.

Wasabi peas are great for congestion. Shower and drink tea. Don't sleep with your hair wet, or you'll get sicker. Try to avoid exerting yourself beyond what is neccesary, and whatever you do, don't go scuba diving.
And if you teach my freshman class, Captain Kidd, I'll be ready.

interesting topic Tinna, thanks. even after all I am not a doctor by profession, but anyway I will suggest only 2 things for the cold. It is upto you to apply it or not, I am not stressing that you must apply, but you may apply if you do not want to take medicines. 1. are you spending number of hours in air conditioner!, if the answer is yes, then keep in mind sometime the cold starts when you leave the ac room or hall. if not but during a rainy season or in damp climate and who is sleeping under the "full speed fan" above head may persist cold problem very often. few people are having some alergies like a closeness in one nostril eighter left or right, may be there is a deviation in the nostril and due to it, synositis may occur in which one can experience headache and uneasyness too.

what to do:

Take a full glass of water into one pot, boil it on the gas especially before sleeping time, boil it till it gets bubbles into it rapidly, then keep the pot on the table, keep off the gas, later take one full lemon, cut it into two pieces, add it into the warm water, later just drink it by keeping it in one soccer, don't drink this water too hot, and not too cold, but try to take hot water as far as you can bare (you know we drink hot coffee/tea). Then complete the one glass water course. later you are not allowed to go outside of the home, and do not use any fan for atleast one hour, you will experience quite good later, if you do this thing for consistant 2 days, then your cold problem will be cure.

I use this simple therapy at my home in India.
