English is mixed with way to many words that belong to another language. Example:garage (French) and so many root words from latin. Why don't we just speak latin? Maybe it would be easier to pronounce things if we did.

I vote we call it what it was orignally named by Herschell and it stood for over 40 years. [The French might be willing to accept it now.]

There is a similar problem with the pronunciation of the term 'phagocyte'. I pronounce it 'FAY-go-cite', whereas I've heard it pronounced 'FAG-o-cite' before.

None of the above--I pronounce it the way my grandfather taught me--
"you rain es".

offtopic:
Gyro as in food, probably, as it's waaaay off (Gyro as in mechanics is phonetic)... As for food, I pronounce it "Hero" /offtopic As far as Uranus, most people make a big deal out of it when I say it, maybe I have a funny face? |

Urine is. It's a perfectly normal, natural Latin name that middle school monkeys have discredited.
I'm Greek and I say "Yeer-oh". And never talk about the Faukland Islands in a class with such monkeys.

Hey! How come I got a moderator's nastygram when I made a small joke about this in the Astronomy section? Made me apologize and everythin'.

Don't mess with Wolverine, BigDon. He has claws. And healing factors. He fought the Hulk and survived. ;-)
3dknight, don't you know not to believe everything you see on the Internet? The assumed nationality of my human identity is none of your buisness.

I know not to believe everything on the internet. I just wanted to catch you in the act. You seemed so dedicated to your character that I thought you would never reveal an opening.

Actually, I pronounce it "oo-ran-ohs," myself, because that's how the friend who was taking Ancient Greek pronounced it.

Your pronunciation is actually the closest to the original, the Greek Ouranos, the sky god for whom the planet was named. Uranus is a Latinized/Anglicized version of Ouranos.
