Default Stupid GM

So GM (General Motors) workers go on strike in the US (and so hence Canada, but I can't say about elsewhere).

This is all fine, except that my wife is now off work because of it, with no pay, and she doesn't work for GM

She works for a division of Magna, which supplies parts.

I'm glad we're not struggling to get by from paycheck to paycheck. It would really suck to lose your house because someone else goes on strike

End of my rant

Pete

PS I do note that a tentative agreement has been reached, but my wife is still off until it's settled

I don't want to sound insensitive, because I do sympathize.

Unfortunately in this "just in time inventory" world, a supplier needs to be diversified to ride out this kind of issue. If your business is completely reliant on one company, you're hands are tied by that company.

It sounds like your wife's company probably makes good money off of GM and doesn't need to branch out (except in this case). I see too many companies dropping lower profit lines due to greed, and then whine because the remaining line's industry/customer is flailing. (maybe not too many... But I see it where I work)

I just heard that GM and the union have reached a tentative agreement, so hopefully your wife is back to work too.

Not if his "PS" in the OP is correct.

Thats the problem I have with strikes. A few years ago with the NHL (hockey, for the non-sports fans) had it's infamous strike, and was a prime example. The players didn't want their salaries capped (even though the cap for one year was litterally what I'd make in 10 years). But they had no qualms about going on strike, and putting all the hard working blue-collard people that say, cleaned the arenas or manned the concessions out of work.

But any strike is going to hurt innocents. Sometimes it's unavoidable. I don't know what the situation was/is over at GM, but it certianly could have been one of those situations.

I could understand people working for less than minimum wage in a factory striking, or because the working conditions were so poor or dangerous.

I cannot understand people making between twice and a hundred times the national mean salary striking.

They ought to be fired. There's lots of people who were cut during tryouts who'd love to fill their shoes.

If we halt the ISS, all versions of Ares, and transport Orion and Altair aboard DIRECTv3's Jupiter family of Shuttle-Derived Launch Vehicles, we just might make it back to the Moon by 2020.

Simple. Negotiations have failed--the other side (which might be making over a thousand times the national mean salary) refuses to give up any of their amassed plunder.

Time to unrant, pull my foot out of my mouth and state that my wife is going back to work today and won't miss a single shift (although it would have been nice to spend the afternoon with her).

It looks like GM is going to settle

BTW I am in a union myself (teacher's union) and I've been lucky enough to avoid any strikes myself (by one year, whew!). I've been in job action, but not a full strike, which would suck bigtime.

I figure for a teacher's strike (or any other goevernment strike), the government saves money for the duration of the strike, then can use that money to increase wages or whatever.

Pete

PS please don't get too political in this thread...people are very opinionated when it comes to unions, and I don't mean to start a flame war
