I don't like the guy, but anyone who gets a Nobel deserves to be congradulated for it. So, begrudgingly, congradulations Mr. Gore.

(I'm just suprised he didn't get one for inventing the Internet )

According to the Nobel Committee

"for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change"

There are several ways to promote peace, ending wars is only one.

I am a bit conflicted about this myself.

Seems to be more of a popularity vote than a 'real' award for his real efforts about Peace...

I might have to fester on this more before I get upset about it.

Congratulations are certainly in order for Mr. Gore, quite an achievement to receive such a prestigious award.

According this article/interview, the Nobel peace prize committee has changed standards from Nobel's original intent which was,

Quote:
to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.
to,

Quote:
In recent years, however, the criteria for who should win has broadened somewhat, according to Ole Danbolt Mjoes, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. In fact, Mjoes recently told the Washington Post that work on arms control and arranging peace conferences is now "out of style," and that a new criterion has gained favor: "It is about how we live together, share resources ... about preserving the Earth.
IMO according to the original intent of the Nobel, he doesn't deserve the award, but by today's standards he does.

Given that his work has reached across national boundaries and has been built upon the concensus of minds from quite a few walks of life, he's still under the original category under the first clause. In attempting to foster cooperation at an international level to address climate change, he's also taking steps to avoid potential resource conflicts which very well could become armed engagements if the matter is left to its own devices.

And she's right, the peace congress thing is pretty frelling pedantic.

So, even if I don't agree with everything he says, he's kosher on the win under the original definition in my book on the first two clauses.

Now, having just defended Al Gore's win of the Nobel, I need a few moments in the men's room scouring my mouth out with soap and steel wool...

The only head I've had in a freezer lately is my own...long story, but she was hot, and the shower wasn't cold enough.

Ack.......grrr.....

I dunno if I agree that the classic peace conference is 'out of style' but apparently you are correct.

I still dont think he should have won it, but I guess he does qualify. Any further discussion would be highly political. grrrrr.....

Half undressed is a heckuva time to realize hooking up with your best friend's ex-wife might not be a brilliant idea...

I know, you were working on a controlled warming experiment so you could extrapolate it to the global level.

Half undressed is a heckuva time to realize hooking up with your best friend's ex-wife might not be a brilliant idea... Heckuva time to realize it, but better than not realizing it 'till you're half redressed. Of course, that depends on your definition of "better"...and how much you really like your best friend.

First mistake: Attributing anything resembling "nobility" to the motives of Doodler.

I just saw a story that someone protested the ballots were counted incorrectly, and after a recount it was won by George Bush.

swift, I stole your idea. Can you ever forgive me?

I don't think it's fair that you're all overlooking the Nobel Piece prize, which had to go to Donald Trump. Afterall, noone has a more recognizable piece than his.

Asking a question is a "downward spiral"? It just shows how inherently political this whole thing is. Yeesh.

It's not political for me. But yes - GW has become very political. Fortunately, the posts haven't gone in the political direction . . . yet.

Sorry, your response just seemed a bit sharp for the question asked, and what with this being the second Gore thread in two days . . .
