Both my mother and grandmother greased the pan when cooking bacon. I'm more patient though, and not trying to bustle the family out the door to work and school, as I usually only cook a big breakfast like that on weekends... So I don't grease the pan.

For breakfast I'll usually just throw the bacon in the pan- but for BLT's baking it works best. Crisp crunchy bacon on sandwiches is much better than pan-fried.

I use one of those health grills, similar o the one that George Foreman is reduced to plugging.

That thing is superb for grilling...onions. But I still didn´t manage to grill beef decently [I doubt it is possible].

You usually sear the steak with high heat....this does'nt take long_...
and then finish it in the oven. This works.
While you wait, have some onion soup.

I was told many years ago that the overcooking or burning of fat creates some new chemicals that are the real danger from eating fatty substances. Maybe fatty bacon is safer than crisp bacon.

I think it is the "NITRITES" they add to the meat which, when confronted by the high heat, that become the problems. It is possible to get natural bacon without the "help" but you are going to pay.

So, danscope, where exactly do you get this "natural" bacon you talk about, how much would it cost, and does it taste better?

Personally, I say don't worry about it and just eat the stuff in moderation.

Hi, Yes, you are right; moderation. For as often as you perhaps might et bacon, what is generlly available is ok. Two pounds a week? Maybe not such a good idea. It's your choice in moderation.
Do as you will.
Best regards, Dan

Yeah, but where can you get this "natural bacon" you speak of? That's my other question.

HI, A google of "natural bacon revealed this...

HORMEL® NATURAL CHOICE® - Uncured Bacon
HORMEL™ NATURAL CHOICE™ Uncured Bacon is all natural, with no preservatives or artificial ingredients. Served with breakfast, in a sandwich or any other way ...
www.hormelnatural.com/products_bacon.html - 21k - Cached - Similar pages.

There were other sights. It's most probably quite expensive.

Nothing's easy.

Best regards, Dan

my edit

As Groucho mentioned to his daughter Melinda, once (seeking her opinion of going to do 'You Bet Your Life') :

...Honey, I used to be a ham; now I'm a strip of bacon.....

Man, I'm vegetarian, and even I am annoyed by those scientists and the politicians who follow every new science trend blindly.

(for the record: Nothing wrong about bacon. I LOVE the smell of frying bacon - just can't eat it... )
