Purely from a pragmatic point of view, whetever your morals, we need to maintain it in a form that can support us. And all the messes we're making right now appear to be in the process of compromising our biosphere. Enlightened self-interest should be enough of a motivator to make one want to reduce our tendency to degrade previously balanced ecosystems.
