Default 2007 in Review

Well, it sure was some year. To sum it up in one word, we might say Anniversary, because it certainly was a big year for anniversaries:
60 years since the Sound Barrier was broken
50 years since Sputnik.
30 years of Star Wars.
30 years of Voyager.

Ten years since Sojourner and the new age of Mars exploration.
(And probably a million more anniversaries.)
But talk about those new beginings!
Dawn and Phoenix lifted off!
Some promising news of recent weeks:
Doctors discover way to get stem cells from skin cells. (Maybe we can all just get along.)
Planetary Society announces plans to build second solar sail.

Of course, any year has it's hard knocks, like the disapearance of Mr. Fossett, but NASA certainly showed us the value of perserverance:
Spirit and Oppy stuggled through dust storms, but kept on trucking.
Despite problems with solar panels, computers and heat tiles, astronauts continued to complete great work on ISS.

So, as 2007 winds down and 2008 looms ahead, let's remember these lessons: that if we remember the past and have fortitude in the present, we can create a beautiful future.

And Norman Mailer.

(Funny parenthetical Norman Mailer story--the reason Norman Mailer hated Gore Vidal is that Gore Vidal had said that Norman Mailer shot his wife in the back. Norman Mailer took huge exception to that, because only a [derogatory term for an effeminate man or common nickname for a cat] would shoot someone in the back. He shot her in the face.)
