These really have very little do with each other.
Except this, perhaps. About noon yesterday (being Thursday) it began to rain. It rained all night, and despite this report of 1.25 inches (others in the area reported up to 4), I must heartily disagree. My neighbor this morning dumped his rain gauge out before heading to work. It was at 6 inches. That was this morning. The heaviest rains have come of the storm this afternoon. We have had an-inch-an-hour times in the past, and there were squalls today much MUCH heavier than those had been. Granted, they didn't last as long, but even in the "gentle" moments it was very definitely raining buckets. There were several squalls today where I could not see across the street for the rain. I didn't watch the meteor shower last night (and lost a great "date" doing so I might add, will have to make that one up). This morning I awoke to "CRASHCRACK CRAAAAACK BOOM BOOM". Imagine that is a huge font size. That was a rather large branch saying "Good Morning, here's your coffee!". That was also about the time the power went out. By tonight there are many branches down all over the place and flooding in the valleys and basements. This evening it has quieted down, and I came over to the office since the building runs on generator when the power is out. I am killing time while the laundry dries. So far I have put one load through three times. THREE TIMES! The humidity is high enough to keep it wet. Not a great dryer to start with, but I've never had to do a small load three times! Despite all the complaints, it was one of the more powerful witnesses of nature I have seen in a while, and I've been in some doozies. No lightning this time, but that would have only made it better. At some point it is so much, anymore is just better. It almost made up for blocking the meteor shower, and I guess we sorta need the rain...(we've been about half normal all year). I feel for the folks stuck as there is more coming over the weekend, and anything above the snowline will just get pounded even more. Landslides are an issue to, but so far I haven't heard any horror stories. Let's hope it stays that way.The other reason I like it is this means snow in the mountains! Snow means skiing now, rafting in the spring, and not as many water issues come next summer! (I hope, though SoCal may end up just buying it all :P). So that's my rant. Edit: I forgot to mention my roomates car. That "rather large branch" fell on the roof and scared the jeepers out of us. It then bounced or rolled straight onto his car. The garage said $10K in damages and a month to fix it. AND $90/day storage fee. While I am thankful for snow, he is thankful for insurance. ![]()
