1) Is the survey for Americans, or for Americans and Canadians?

2) If the latter, effort really doesn't apply. Other than collected/hoarded bills, Canadians simply can't get money in 1$ or 2$ bills anymore. They've all be retired and destroyed.

For what it's worth, I dislike using coins in general, but I'll grant vending machines would be a serious pain to use without the larger coins. Doesn't make up for it, though.

I make no effort to use US dollar coins. If they show up in my change, I use them. I'd been fine if the US dropped paper dollars and just went to coins (the coins are more economical for the Mint), but I don't much care either way. But I hardly ever see them. The only place I regularly get them in change is at the Post Office.

The only reason I answered No is because I dont think I've ever gotten the new Presidential Dollar in change. Ever. But if I did, I'd probably spend it :-D

I said yes because I do make an effort to buy my stamps through the PO machine, which gives them in change. I do that because one $1 coin is easier to tote around then four quarters, and we use them to pay tolls. (You can toss the correct amount in coins into the collection bin; I think the machine would freak out if you threw in a bill.)

Otherwise, bills are nicer because they take up less space in my pocket, and they weigh less.

As an aside, USers have used Canadian dimes for decades as if the were US ones; they're the same size and color, so no one notices much. A couple of weeks ago, I got my first Canadian dollar coin in change.

Here in TX? In 20+ years of living in TX, I've only gotten one Canadian penny. Where I grew up, Detroit, Canadian coins were common place.

I rarely use the dollar coins, because I never receive any as change.

from Wiki "Canada
Little is said of the fate of Canada in Star Trek. However, in "Blaze of Glory" (DS9), Michael Eddington said he had a 22nd century Canadian loonie he called his "lucky loony [sic]". This means Canada was among the few nations to survive World War III"

Well, that's just odd. Hard to mistake a Loonie for much else.

I also make no effort to use them, but I do get them as change at the PO. I'd go either way - get rid of the bill or the coin. But don't keep both. Until we dump the dollar bill, vending machines and the like will not be modified to accept the coins.

I voted yes but I suppose if I was really making an effort I'd go to the bank and ask for them. Otherwise I never see them. Merchants will never use them until they are forced to by removal of dollar bills from the system.

The state ferry system here does frequently give change in .50 pieces and $2 bills, both of which are also uncommon.

I vastly prefer the dollar bill to the dollar coin, though I'll use the coins if I happen to have some.

I do very few cash transactions. When I get loonies or twonies, I usually throw them into the coffee holder in the pickup for use at the carwash or the water vendor.

I'm also that guy in front of you in the line giving my change to the cashier so that I'll get bills back.

Is the Canadian one still right? I was under the impression that the Royal Canadian Mint had switched to plated steel coinage.

The thought of going to dollar coins annoys me. I'm a guy...i.e., I don't have a bag to carry stuff in. My g/f is a waitress and often pays her half of the mort'g in cash from her job, which is often lots of ones. I have no desire to walk around with that many coins in my pocket.

I never have change on me because I hate carrying coins. Anytime I go somewhere that gives me change in coins, I throw them in the tray in my car, or give them to my g/f.

Now if they do away with the paper $1, but get everyone to agree to give me a paper $10+ every time I need $1's for change, then I'd be happy to switch.

Ditto. In SE Michigan as a kid through high school I got and used Canadian coins all the time, same as American. Stores, gas stations, post office, lunch lady took and gave both. Only vending machines rejected them due to their not being the right composition of metals.

On the dollar coin issue I voted no--ten ones are easier to manage than ten coins. If I had a car I might keep a few for tolls, novelty gifts, etc in the ash tray, but otherwise no way. Sounds like I'm a typical American...though I do like the two-nie for looking cool.

I don't recall even seeing one of the Presidential coins. When the Sacagawea first came out, I made a bit of effort to use it, but it seemed more hassle that it was worth, so I stopped. Prior to that, there was another dollar coin that pretty much everyone flatly avoided, because it looked so similar to a quarter.
