Default NASA Unix computers must be protected from Windows viruses

ACM Risks Digest: Tuesday 29 January 2008: Windows virus protection on NASA Linux machines

Quote:
NASA Langley Research Center [LaRC] is now requiring all desktop Linux
machines to be equipped with an antivirus program that detects and
eliminates Windows viruses. Why? Apparently it is because there is an
uncited NIST recommendation suggesting all desktop machines have virus
scanners.
I hope this isn't true.

Is this to stop window's viruses being unwittingly transferred to window's machines?

Exactly; They may not get infected, but they may be carriers.

After the recent Malware on digital photo frames incidents, I think scanning all computers is a good idea, regardless of OS.

I agree; though I think they need to protect from Mac OS viruses aswell--after all, we all saw how easy it was for Jeff Goldblum to take down a totally unknown OS with a simple mac virus.

Default Belaboring the Obvious (Again!)

The best way to avoid having Windoze viruses on your computers is to not have any Windoze computers!

They're NASA after all. What do they need Windoze for? Besides for the Solitaire game, of course.
