Absolutely... but, it was a considerably longer time than I would think it would have been.

I think another issue is just dairy land that's available. Ohio is littered with old dairy farms. When the small farms existed, the distribution channel was more direct. Now; even though some of those small farms exist, they are still affilliated with some large distribution chain.

Our ca. 1950 tract house in the Cleveland suburbs had a built-in milk chute next to the side door. I don't remember when delivery stopped but it was fun to open the little door in the morning and find milk there. Later on, it was a convenient way to get in the house if you accidentally locked yourself out, since you could pop the inner chute door and reach the doorknob.

But we usually neglected to lock the door anyway. Sigh.

Up until I left Long Island in 2003 there were stil signs advertising milk delivery services. They also sold glass bottle milk from the Dairy Barn, which is where I always got it. My husband was convinced that I was insane for spending more on milk for no purpose, but I still maintain that milk tasted different out of a glass bottle.

The milkman has been transformed. A local supermarket near me has a delivery service. You log on to their web site, click on the items you want (including milk) and they deliver it for a fee. Don't know if it will catch on, but it is convenient. I know quite a few web sites tried to do it during the .com bubble, but failed. Maybe this time it will work especially if they price the service properly.

Yep; that's pretty much a Cleveland suburb. I grew up in one, and that's where everything was delivered. Wet newspapers, wet mail, etc*.

And; my current home is the second one that I've owned to have one, but this one is into the attached garage... that makes 3 out of 5 with a chute. (I had 50s house with a coal chute too)

My sister was small enought to get her all the way through.

*From the condensation on the milk.

I see bottled water delivery trucks all over the place in the Phoenix, Arizona area. The tap water here doesn't taste very good. I buy my drinking water at a 99¢ store or supermarkets which is cheaper than having it delivered. Drinking water delivery doesn't have the cooling and spoilage problems of milk.

A local supermarket here, Basha's, will deliver groceries for a fee of $8.00 per delivery. I signed up for the service in 2003 after a bicycling mishap but never used it, having recovered sufficiently to lean on a shopping cart before running out of groceries.
