Default Milkmen, Do They Still Exist Anywhere?

I haven't seen one since 1970. Foremost milk.

If there aren't any milkmen, why do all those kids look different?

I think ours lasted into the early 70's, but not much after that. It had advantages and disadvantages: I remember spoiled milk on hot summer days and frozen milk on cold wintry days.

But; I think the biggest factor was that housewives were becoming rare at that time. Without the wife at home, the milk would sit out all day, and people didn't like that. Milk chutes helped, but not enough.

Perhaps we need to develop a theory of Schrödinger's milkman.

I still got one tho.

BigDon - there is hope. i.e. http://www.longmontdairy.com/

Check out organic suppliers. Also, if you have Mennonite farmers in your area, they might be a resource.

I've seen milk deliveries in my neighborhood recently.

I see pints of milk on doorsteps even around here in the mornings, and I'm fairly confident they're not left there by samaritan cows.

I think it was mostly the affordability of refrigeration in homes that killed off the milkman profession. When you only need to buy milk once a week instead of every day, it's not so inconvenient to go get it yourself.

Milkmen, Do They Still Exist Anywhere?

There's a dairy here in Colorado Springs that still makes home deliveries.

I remembet when I was a kid in New Mexico (around '70) we had milk deliveries for a while. I considered it a novelty then, and we never had it after our time there. At the top of the milk bottle, I remember the milk was very thick, basically cream. It probably wasn't the healthiest option for us, and I can hardly stand drinking high fat milk today . . .

Move to the UK, Don!

http://www.milkdeliveries.co.uk/doorstep/index.htm from Dairy Crest, "the UK's premier chilled dairy foods company".

Not only large conglomerates, but small, one-round roundsmen too. But they are under threat form the big boys. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/...omy/401934.stm

Maybe the milk man should come right after the ice man. Then the milk wouldn't have to get warm.

I remember milk deliveries in Pittsburgh in the fifties but not in the sixties. Ice delivery was before my time.

We had milk delivered when I was a child (mid-late 80's), so I know that they've been around in some form later than you're aware of, Don.

Actually, while Japan isn't a big milk-consuming society, there are actually milkmen. We used to get milk delivered to our house a couple of times a week, by Meiji (a dairy company) I think.

I would imagine that there are a lot of places in the world (in Eastern Europe, for example) where refrigerators are not universal and where there are still milkmen in business.

Folks in Alaska have refrigerators to keep their food from getting too cold.

Yes, we do have a milkman. Again... The milkman was gone for decades but now that service returned.
He brings us our milk, eggs and yogurt every Monday and Thursday.

I assumed that "convenience" stores were the principle cause of the
milkman's demise. Practically every household had a refrigerator by
the early 1950's. And an ice box would keep milk cold as long as it
is supplied with fresh ice every couple of days.

Oh, wait-- The thing that made "convenience" stores work is almost
certainly what killed the milkman: Cars. When every household had
a car, to drive three blocks to the convenience store, you don't need
the milkman anymore.
