i remember one episode of Voltron where the giant robot was knocked out on some distant planet, and all the people were knocked out. the power was almost down to zero... things were pretty bleak.
so, to rescue them, the old guy back at the castle sent them some energy via microwaves, and Voltron was able to get off the planet before it blew up or whatever. so, yes, it must be possible.

The short answer is yes.
Over short distances, using RF energy to transmit small amounts of power is possible. At least one company is apparently close to commercializing it, and other approaches are being experimented with. Over really short distances we've had inductive wireless power for a while now, with many applications like phone and toothbrush chargers.

Is a cordless extension cord possible? I'd have to say no, simply because if it is indeed cordless, I don't see how it can also be a cord...

I still say no.
Most of the responses deal with microwave transmissions- which are weak at best and lethal if you want to use a power tool. Batteries are not what jonathan had in mind I am sure. There has been talk of using lasers to beam power through space but, as an extension cord? The point of an extension cord or battery operated tool is mobility. You can move around with it. Climb a ladder... etc. Now if you are beaming power to a unit- doesn't it need to stay in place otherwise it hops out of line of sight and loses power? |

Infuse the air with fuel, draw it into the device and burn it to provide power.
You may want to have some system where the fuel only ignites in the presence of a reusable catalyst within the device for, you know, safety reasons. For example, the fuel could be popcorn and the the device could be powered by respiration. |

The theory works in ranges other than microwaves, too. One of my favorite CB antennas had an internal coil with about a 2 square inch footprint. The external antenna wasn't directly connected, but the radiated power went through the window glass.
Earlier car phones (before cell phones became popular) did much the same thing.
