Heh. You'll have to move to the UK and pick a weekend to try, Sean. You're not going to do that from the Dakotas on a Tuesday.

Oh, and it's a perfectly fair statement.

A publicly-traded corporation has to be pretty careful about what they announce. It doesn't take all that much to affect a stock price. If they were to say, purely hypothetically, that they're dropping Product X because of "quality control problems" at Company Y, then it's going to have a major impact on Company Y's stock price and quite possibly trigger a lawsuit of some sort.

Walmart committed to Blu-Ray, but framed the announcement it in such a way as to not heap on unnecessary injury to Toshiba itself. They did not publish a transcript of what was really said at the meeting when they made that decision, and it is very unlikely that they ever will. So using the term "claim" is entirely fair.

Not at all. I mean "claim to be" purely as "have said that".

Fair enough, I suppose. In context, Delvo's post implied that WalMart was controlling the market, and Lianachan's use of "claim to be responding to" seemed to suggest that he might agree with Delvo. But I concede your point.

The fact that they are now all making the same type of machine is not really important.
That might seem to be the case, but it's not. There have been at least three manufacturers in the BluRay arena (Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung) and all three have priced their gear significantly higher than similarly-featured HD-DVD equipment. (In some respects the HD-DVD players were more sophisticated than the BluRays, since the standard included more non-optional features. Yet they were still less expensive.)

The same is true for the media. Take a look at the prices for the BluRay and HD-DVD releases from the studios that have been providing both. BluRay discs are more expensive -- even though there was an incentive to keep the prices low when there was a competing standard. Now that's gone.

I haven't even turned my TV on in the last 12 months. I watch all my movies via my computer. It's now partially integrated with my stereo system, and when I upgrade my computer in a couple of months, it'll be fully integrated, 5.1 Surround sound through my stereo, with my computer handling the Blu-Ray, my computer monitor being the only monitor I'll have in the house any more.

I'm glad the industry went towards a standard.

Someone should have whispered the news to Universal Studios.

Editorial note: Just what we need, a movie about drug dealers and cops. The originality is overwhelming.

That's what I do with the PS3, although obviously it's connected to my HD TV. I can stream all of the media on my PC to it, and watch it on said TV.

There are multiple economic reasons why BluRay may cost more than HD-DVD that don't include the manufacturers acting like monopolistic scum.

The first that springs to mind is that demand for this new technology was higher than for HD-DVD (BluRay did win after all!).

But now that the industry standard is defined, expect to see more entrants to the market (what you think they're just going to sit out the next decade?). Over time, prices will drop.

There may be a short term increase though as the market signals an increase in demand while supply has yet to react.

I had expected the opposite outcome because, several months ago, I read that the BR system kept having bugs and not working right... but at least I noticed someone at another forum saying he thinks he was right to get a PS3 instead of an X-Box, if that means Microsoft was involved with HD-DVD. They're almost as bad as Sony.

Still, HD-DVD had the far more appropriate and straightforward name; it's like a DVD, but in HD! Not only is "that other one" not such a perfect name, but they even just had to go out of their way to put it in NEGATIVE territory by misspelling it...

I think the biggest reason for the hardware being slightly more expensive was that BD players came to market several months later than HD-DVD players, and because of the way the price cut cycle worked, HD-DVD was always ahead. But not by much. And not really at all on media, from what I've seen.

Does all this mean there will soon be hybrid HDVDegenerate/Beta clubs springing up all over?

And what will the BlumeanieRays do about them?

See, I have a nice, big TV--I'd much rather watch movies on it. They don't make monitors the size of my TV, and if they did, it would be inconvenient for doing, you know, computer stuff.

Generally speaking.
But older tv shows aren't in HD. Or would they need to mess around with video formats to get it to display properly on an HDTV?

Depends on the show. Many older shows were shot on standard 35mm film, and so can be digitally remastered in hi-def format (ETA: That's what was done with the original Star Trek for the new HD-DVD release. Poor Paramount - picked a losing format again). Shows that were originally shot on videotape (or standard-def digital video) would be "upgraded" to hi-def in much the same way that some DVD players "upconvert" standard DVDs to a hi-def-type output.

But more recent shows, like Battlestar Galactica (which was the specific show referenced in the post I responded to) are actually produced in hi-definition video format, and could be put onto BluRay in their full original format (although I presume the original format is uncompressed and it would have to be compressed for BluRay).

I suppose it's possible to put standard-def video on BluRay and get significantly more hours per disc, but that kind of defeats the purpose. The idea is to get consumers hi-def video, not to free up space on their shelves.

They used a non-standard spelling so that they could trademark it.

And here lies the problem. I read Babylon 5 instead of Battlestar Galactica. So... er... disregard...
