Well you know everything is relative. Italians put their turtle necks on when it is 25°C. We Germans pull our T-shirts off then. (I guess Norwegians are already swimming in the sea at that temperature).

Obviously Texans think about buying winter coats then. Would be interesting what The Supreme Canuck does at that temperature.

BTW: When did you live in Stuttgart? The last two summers were absolutely disgusting cold and wet.

What, 25C? That's a warm summer day. Swimming, definitely.

No. The big mac index was developed as an informal standard. The ingrediants for a big mac are pretty much available anywhere, and most people know what one is. So any difference in pricing is going to reflect the local economy.

Problem is that it'll also reflect different cultures, ie. whether eating out is common or not, since the price will be higher compared to average cost of living if fewer people eat them.

Nice to have you back BTW.

Thank you, Mr. Olsen

(Now I'm thinking of Niles Olsen from Little House on The Prairie. )

Bolt mine:

Thats true, but my thinking is it is a good first order approximation. The best standard would be to check the local average incomes. But the BigMac Index is easier to be found.

Norwegians swim in the ocean when it's above freezing. For salt water.

(Note: the above assertation is based on a sample size of one slightly-crazy Norwegian.)

Back on topic, after being impressed with their Pils and Schwartzbier varieties, I bought a case of Breznák "Bernstein" dark lager, which seems to be a new brew from them. I'm drinking one right now. It's very good.

August 2006 - August 2007. 28C was the absolute highest temperature during an entire year. Tomorrow it will be 30C here.

It is a beautiful city and beautiful country. 25C yesterday and we went Kayaking and swam just for a few minutes.

OH, and about the Italians, they just love to wear their winter fashion. They'd wear shampoo bottles if the magazines told them it was in style.

If you ever get the chance, try the original stuff:
it's called Budvar, comes from the Czech Republic, and tastes really great.
(I think in the US it's called Czechvar because of the trademark dispute with Anheuser-Busch's Budweiser)

Maybe there is a Czech national on this forum who can tell us more about the background...

Bolt mine: That was really bad luck. You picked the lousiest summers of the last some 30 years!
In 2003 (or was it 2002) we had temperatures from 30-37C for several weeks.
Hey, so you are the BAUTER I have maybe been closest to and know of!
This is true for time and space!
(I was in Stuttgart on the new trade fair last year in September, that was during the "Kannstatter Wasen" Volksfest.
So we missed quite close.

And for the Italians: Nah, I used to visit an Italian company in Parma regulary some years ago. If you came there in April, 25C the ladies in the office had ther lambs wool turtle necks on and their whole body language showed that they felt really cold. You know, shoulders pulled together, rubbing hands and that "frozen" look on the face only women seem to have.

Some gracy people in Hamburg here do that also. I think on New Years day or something.

you mean this Volksfest?

(some of my best friends in Stuttgart)

We drank a lot of beer during that time.

I'm sure we were within 10km of each other and probably within 1.

yep! Originally the plan was to visit the Volksfest with 2 of our American business partners, but than I had to leave in the evenings for important private reasons.
(I live about 2 1/2 hours by car North West from Stuttgart)

Heh, these people look exactly like University students to me , and I realise again there is a nice blonde lady on one of your pictures.....

the two girls pictured are Polish girls, and both are very nice.

Volksfest was an amazing time for all of us exchange students.

Good news for beer drinkers !!!

Quote:
Researchers from the University of Alcala in Madrid, Spain, in a report published in the January, 2008 issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology, pointed out that aluminum is neurotoxic and has been implicated as a causal factor in Alzheimer’s disease. But beer contains silicon, a substance that affects the bioavailability of aluminum. The study, which involved giving both an aluminum compound and beer to mice and later analyzing aluminum concentrations in brain tissue, found that the silicon in “moderately high” levels beer intake – the equivalent of two beers per day - limited the ability of aluminum to damage the brain.

It’s a large leap – and one I’m unwilling to make - to contend that we should all begin consuming two beers a day as a result of this study. But several studies have shown that moderate consumption of alcohol, on the order of one beer or glass of wine per day, may have cardio- and neuroprotective effects. If you don’t drink, you need not start, as there are other strategies that show promise in forestalling the development of Alzheimer’s. But moderate alcohol consumption can indeed be part of a healthy lifestyle.

So keep chugging even if nothing is proved yet..

And stop using Al-containing antiprespirants/deodorants.

Remember Al-zheimers = Al-uminum

Bleh. Beer in cans? No thanks - the metal gives the beer a funk.

Most beer barrels are metal now.
