Default Films like oil paintings?

There are a few films I will watch again and
again when the come round on the box. They are
like warm comforting blankets for a while with
no surprises.

Twelve Angry Men. The development of the story
and how each actor has a Big part keeps this
watchable.

Rope. The terrible act preceding a civilised
party, the light fading into sunset outside,
the continuous 10 minute takes (with one
exception, a reaction shot of James Stewart).

Dial M for Murder. Very cosy and civilised and
the villain getting done by Grace. Sure it was
Hitchcock who speaks the word "Guilty".

All the Presidents men. The scenes of
Washington, the erie machinery noise at night
in quiet car parks, the music, and the
developing story told unhurridly.

And a few others.

This weekend I did something I haven't done in a long while: turn off a dvd because I was bored with the movie.

Syriana, with George Clooney

I have no idea where they were going with that film, but after an hour, I had no interest in finding out.

74% on the Tomatometer, though. Haven't checked the Gillianrenmeter.

I haven't seen it yet. It starts with "S."

Oops, I forgot - you're on a pre-determined course through the movie database.

Through the library catalog, anyway. I do have Doctor Zhivago on its way, though. That's, um, long and political.

Have you seen 'Doctor Zhivago' before? I believe I mentioned a month or
two ago that I had just seen it recently (on TCM) and was surprised to
learn that it is essentially a soap opera. I wasn't bothered by the length.
It would have been nice to see it on a bigger screen, though.

I have, yes, but it was some fifteen years ago. High school. We were (supposed to be) reading Crime and Punishment at the time, and our teacher apparently decided that, well, she liked Doctor Zhivago, and it is also set in Russia. It's not as though most of us finished Crime and Punishment anyway.

I just missed seeing that one on a really big screen.
The cinema with Denmark's largest screen had a 70mm festival and Dr. Zivago was one of the movies shown. 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia was shown as well and I managed to miss all of them

One must admire your consistency.

I saw Doctor Zhivago, during its original release, in a widescreen theater. The best thing was the outdoor cinematography. Jarre's music was so-so and very derivative here and there. It was fun hearing all those balalaikas though. The worst thing was the story.

Doctor Zhivago, the second most boring movie I've ever seen. Actually, the most boring I watched all the way through. My wife and I both agreed to walk out on "Elvira Madigan". Some movies I can watch over and over; "Zulu", "Blazing Saddles", 50's MGM musicals (I'm in the process of buying all I can.) and even (guilty pleasure) "Red Dawn". Right now I'm watching the original "On the Beach", stupid premise, great movie. I keep hoping they all don't die in the end.

I watched a couple of movies, that I taped off TCM some time ago, the other night. Gilda and The Killers (1946). I have to track down a copy of the 60's version with Reagan, Lee Marvin and Angie Dickenson for comparison (haven't seen it in ages). Apparently there is a DVD release, with both versions on it.

Taped Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter off CBC awhile ago, enjoyed that one. Saw his Where The Truth Lies on Bravo, the other week, I kept hoping it would get better.

What was the worst?

When I saw Doctor Zhivago, the changes in season (to indicate the passage of time) became so frequent that the audience began to laugh every time we moved from spring flowers, to snow, and back.

When in college, I watched Follow Me Boys all the way through, though a couple of my friends walked out. I simply couldn't stand to admit that I had wasted the price of admission. If you're not familiar with the movie, don't bother looking it up. It's not worth your time.

Oh, Treb! How wrong you are! I love that movie. I mean, I don't exactly think the Boy Scouts are the solution to all of life's woes, but I do think that's a charming movie. Then again, I have a thing for live action Disney movies from that era.

I bet it was "Elvira Madigan."

Most boring I ever saw was "Pink Floyd's The Wall." Luckily, I watched a friend's tape, so all it cost me was two hours of my life.

Same here! Some of my favorite title (not in any order of preference):

1. Back to the Future (all three in the series)

2. X-Men (all three in the series)

3. Star Wars (all six in the series)

4. Smallville (terrific TV series!)

5. Hogan's Heroes

6. Fantastic 4

7. Harry Potter (all 5 in the series, and possibly a sixth, if the last film is released)

8. Flight of the Phoenix

9. Die Hard, Harder, Hardest

10. The Great Escape

Those are the first ten that come to mind, but there's probably another 20 to 40 that I watch at least once a year.

Well, if that's what floats your boat, go for it.

My recollection is that that period was a couple years after Walt had died and the company seemed to lose its way. They could make ONLY G-rated features and were even screening visitors to Disneyland for long hair or facial hair.

I have to admit, it's at least in part because of my mother's love of it that I love it so--but I don't watch half so many John Wayne movies as she!

Still, Walt was still alive when Follow Me, Boys! was made. Not for much longer, I grant you, but he was alive. I also suggest you check out the Jodie Fosters, all of which were made after Walt died. The best, and probably edgiest, of the lot is the obscure Candleshoe, also starring Helen Hayes and David Niven.

I agree on "Candleshoe." A few years back I was injured on the job, & while I was all bandaged up, medicated, & recovering, I discovered I couldn't watch movies with any violence in them at all. I'd temporarily lost my ability to distance myself from it somehow. So I used my time at home to catch up on all the Disney & other children's flicks I'd missed while growing up. "Candleshoe" was the best find of the lot.
