We should change the title of this thread to Most Intense Moments. Reading through your stories brings back so many other of my own!

I have a few but this one was so scary at the time;

It was around 1981 or 1982, I was away with the scouts on our annual camp, this time on the Isle of Arran, I was enjoying it walking around the place and sea canoeing , I saw a sea fisherman reel in a huge congar eel and I asked what it was, my scout leader said it was a congar eel, and told me that they were dangerous. I had horrible thoughts running through my head, I shouldn't go back in the sea again because of this giant sea beast. But in the end I couldn't resist the call of the water again and took to my canoe and paddled off, watching the water for the huge creatures that I now knew lurked! I was so pre-occupied in watching below waters I didn't realise how far I had gone out ! When I looked up coming out of the waters was a big black submarine I thought it was a congar eel coming to get me, my eyes were massive and I turned my canoe as fast as I could , what a distance I had to paddle back to the shore, I did it in record time.
That shook me up for a long time, but now I laugh at it when I tell anyone, but I was the only girl to do it and none of the guys were brave enough.

Yeah, I saw a lot of tourists and Foreign geologists here back then.
Before that big eruption took place , the volcano is already showing actions, but we were not scared , we even watched it while giving small eruptions from afar , we never thought it will get worse . That experience is really scary, is a long dark day and night that I've ever experienced.

And really unforgettable intense moment.

My most intense moments are the ones I try really hard to forget.

Well, I certainly can't match some of the posts here, but I'll give a few of my highlights.

Seeing The Mice interacting galaxies through a 20-inch Obsession telescope at the Texas Star Party.

Looking at the Virgo Cluster through the 82-inch Otto Struve Telescope at the McDonald Observatory. I felt really, really, small.

Cresting Turn 1 at Laguna Seca on my motorcycle, and realizing that my front tire was off the pavement at 130 mph. (Note to self: Don't Panic!)

Watching the Full Moon rise over the Patriarch Grove at the Bristlecone Pine National Forest.

Developing the film of that moonrise and discovering my camera had malfunctioned and I did not have a photo of it.

Hiking solo in the Yosemite back country, coming face-to-face with a Black Bear, and realizing I was not at the top of the food chain.

Seeing the bear run when I shouted "Boo!"

That's funny; you thought a submarine was a giant eel?

I had a similar ridiculously scared mement once after a sinus cavity surgery. After all the cutting they had packed my sinus with long thin rope-like gauze. In the middle of the night the end started coming down into my throat and was really irritating. After quite a hard coughing spell i just reached back in there and pulled on it.

Well, you could imagine what rope gauze looks like after soaking in mucus and blood for a few hours. It really looked like brains - and for about 2 or 3 seconds I thought my brains had somehow worked their way into my nasal cavity and I was pulling them out my mouth!

Very scary Saw-like moment.

Lol, I can sympathize, I never paddled as fast as the day I thought a Sea Cow was a shark trying to capsize my Kayak.

I find it interesting that for so many people, their most intense moment was negative. Mine was quite positive.

Perhaps that they survived the intense moment is why it is memorable.

I've had many intense positive moments, but we're expected to survive those. They certainly didn't underscore my mortality the was the negative ones did. I think that's part of the reason.
