There's a rice shortage (I don't have details on that, but its been all over the news lately)
And wheat has doubled in the last year. (At least in Kansas)
I'm sure barley's in the same predicament.

Beer price rised already last year. But it did not double...
This year the price will rise by 5-10% because the price for electricity rised by 23%, the orice for gas by 30%, the price for malt by 84% and the price for hops by 52% ... At least in Germany

If you would like to call the liquid they sell in Milwaukee "Beer"...
Yes, they invented whatever it is that they sell.
But IMHO it has nothing to do with beer...
And don't get me started about that stuff from St. Louis...

So; I guess that means you don't have your money tied up in beer keg deposits...
Those have gone up more than double because of the aluminum.

In '01, it cost $0.99 for a 24oz beer. Now they cost $1.79.

It used to cost me $2 to have a "Good Night". Now it costs me $4.

Gee; I paid that for 12 packs in college (early 80s) Of course that was Goebels or Hudepohl, so I'm not sure if that strays away from the discussion of beer.

Corn too ... The mexicans are outraged about the cost of the tortilla ...

Actually I saw this thing that either in south asia or africa people were making cakes from butter, flour , water and dirt.

The us has arguably some of the best beer in the world ... grant it budwieser is not really beer ( as it contains rice ) ( michelob on the other hand is indeed a beer although not great ) and i think miller contains corn.

But there are beers like those from omegong, hair of the dog, or dogfish head brewing companies that are quite good ...

The best beer in the world is from of course belgium it is called westmalle ... However it is somewhat rare ... in belgium it is 24 e for a case of 24 in NY I have seen this go for $20 a bottle at an upscale belgian restaurant.

I would find it hard to believe that there is a shortage of hops ... hops grows like weeds ... in fact there are certain very strict laws about what hops can be grown in an area ...

The rise in corn is probably even worse than other grains in part due to ethenol demand, but I didn't mention that one because I don't think it's used much in beer.

Yes; but how much is due to grain issues, and how much because they eat dirt anyway? (Geophagy)

In the US, ethanol is affecting nearly all agricultural products because land previously used for other crops is being converted to corn.

Yeah, but I remember them saying the same thing in the last 10 years about soy (at least here in the Ohiah' valley). And I believe there's been a back-and-fourth down south'urn way with tobacco v. other crops.

It's supply and demand; as one crop comes into demand, it gets (as they say 'round 'ere) "growed" more than others, which drives the price of others up. Once the price of another crop is attractive to farmers, they switch to that, which eventually drops the price, but raises the price of the previous crop. Etc. etc.

Of course, there's other factors *cough*oil*cough* that raise the cost of farming regardless of crop.

But; recently the news was talking about the corn acreage being down this year. So that wouldn't account for the recent rise in other crops.

I guess it could be that even if corn acreage is down, maybe other crops is "more down", and the ratio is even higher.

Or maybe other factors are just now catching up.

As awkward as that sentance is (Other crops are more down?), it's probably correct. The trend around here has been to sell off farm land for development, although that has slowed down considerably considering the home market at the moment.

Economics might be interesting...if it weren't so da[rn] boring!

Bud, Miller, Coors, all the name brands. When I moved to OC in '02 from Santa Monica, those 24oz cost $1.39. I guess demographics. Right now, I prefer Steel Reserve. I like the kick and at parties, it's so gross no one else will touch it.

It cost me about a gallon of gas to drive to and back from the observatory.

Just curious, how much were you earning back then. I would move furniture during the summer and winter breaks when I was in college. I got ten dollars and tips under the table. So spending two dollars on beer would be about ten minutes worth of work. Right now, a 12 pack of the really cheap beer costs about 5 to 7 dollars, just under the minimum wage in California (8 an hour), was the minimum wage back then just over a dollar?

Prices are different across town. In the Anchor the Sam Smiths 'Old Brewery' is £1.40. Greys Bitter in the Kings Head is £1.50. Black Sheep in the Rugby Club is £2.10. In the 'Tap' prices go from £2 for beers around 3.8 to £2.50 for stronger stuff (around 4.5)

Lager tends to be £2+ across the board.

I say the actual numbers a couple of days ago, didn't write then down as I didn't have anything to write with. but they where something like this: wheat is up by more than 100%, corn by less than 40%, rice is up by more than corn since last year.

Incidentally, I keep thinking it's silly to grow corn for alcohol when you can get about twice the alcohol per acre by growing Jerusalem Artichokes, but perhaps that's not done because it's classified as a weed in those states where it would be most efficient to grow it.
