2012- by the Mayan calender is just when the calender rolls over. All calenders roll over at some point. |

The Mayan Calendar? It enables me to predict the future.
I predict that in the near future a BAUTER with a username consisting entirely of ones and zeroes will provide you with a list of 50 or so previous threads on this topic.

Wait... you meant me. Just a moment...
Among them is at least one topic that addresses the Mayan-calendar aspect of the year 2012. Probably many. Welcome to the list.

Kai the Bad Archeologist will tell you what she told humanrevolution:
Others here are better than me at astronomy, so I'll explain the archeological side of why this stuff is a load of rotten peanut butter: The Mayans had several ancient calendars, measuring different lengths of time, like our years, decades, centuries and millenia. When one "turned over", another one began, just like the 21st century began in 2000/2001 when the 20th century ended. The current Long Count calender ends in 2012, but- and this is important- another Long Count calendar cycle starts. You could call the whole 2012 thing a bit of an ancient version of the Y2K panic!

The History Channel was playing it earlier today.

I think I'll pop over to Maya and discover Calendar II in some ancient ruins. Who wants to help me design it?

Which brings up a semi-serious idea... if these ancients peoples were so knowledgeable that they could predict the end of the world several thousand years in the future, then maybe they were correct on other things too, and sacrificing someone is the way to stop the 2012 disaster. Why embrace only part of the Mayan belief system? Next 2012ist that comes here, we should suggest a sacrifice, and ask if they would like to volunteer, for the sake of the rest of the world. ![]()

What I meant by "An ancient version of the Y2K panic", is that it's a panic because a calendar's turning over that will ulitmately amount to nothing, only about the ancient Maya calendar.
