Default NASA employees get credit

Houston Chronicle: NASA employees big spenders on government credit

Quote:
NASA employees have used government credit cards to ring up iPods, video games and even clothes from the agency's own gift shop, while at other times using the cards in ways that sidestep competitive bidding rules, federal documents and a Chronicle review of agency records show.

The review comes at a time when Congress is considering tightening purchase card regulations across government, after a federal report last month that found widespread abuse in government credit card programs, including charges that did not follow policies to prevent waste and fraud.
[...]
One of the most blatant cases of abuse occurred at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where a former employee pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges and went to federal prison last year after a $157,000 spending spree was uncovered by NASA investigators.
[...]
Among other purchases, she spent $2,000 to install a new air conditioner at her Florida home, more than $51,000 on Wal-Mart gift cards and groceries and at least $13,000 on electronics from Best Buy.
I think we may have some candidates to send to Mars now. And, leave 'em there.

gee how suprising that when you give people unregulated access it money they tend to abuse the privledge.

To be fair tho, I would expect that any agency with these cards is suffereing the same amount of abuse of the priveldge

the scary thing is, it's not unregulated--at least where I work, you have to fill out a form justifying every expense, with receipts and all, to be reimbursed--the government credit card bill is sent, not to the government but to YOU--and if the government decides the expenditure is not worthy, you pay for it yourself.

Assuming it's the same way at NASA, this means somebody is getting the stuff approved somehow....

Absolutely... This story has been going on for some time now. The GAO is doing an investigation across all of government.

Since NASA is a big presence in Houston, it's natural for the Houston paper to single them out.

Here's a story from a quick google.
Audit: Millions Wasted On Government Credit Cards
- Dozens of department agencies audited
- 57 page report.
- 41% of $14B used improper procedures (although could be legitimate expenses)

Since the OP story mentions $265M, it looks like NASA is a drop in the bucket. Although; it would be more fair to compare the discrepancies on a percentage of budget basis for each agency/department.

(01101001) interesting comment by you in the last line, I think in that case the "incidental benefits and milage will be more larger", and they will get a super benefits onwards, because earth-mars-earth to and fro distance is big one, and we calculate the cost per kilometer then it will get more huge than the expectations, because today per kilometer cost is rising after consuming petrol on the ground, but on the ground the average cost of a vehicle per kilometer is larger because if we calculate it on the earth's roads then on turns, on speed breakers, and using the clutch all the time the average of the vehicle may decline, but in space there are no barricades of flying, hence the average also will get more. + halting charges or allowances etc are added advantage.
