Default Why do astrologers say "Scorpio"...

...and not "Sagittario" and "Aquario"?

They're using the Latin terms. See:

Scorpio
Aquarius
Sagittarius

It seems that both forms are defensible. The entry for "scorpion" says the following:

Quote:
scorpion

c.1225, from O.Fr. scorpion, from L. scorpionem (nom. scorpio), extended form of scorpius [...]

I got the impression that that's what the OP meant. Why do astrologers prefer Scorpio over Scorpius? Ergo, why not the others.

Default Well...

Well, I prefer Scorpia, but I admit I may be a special (head) case.

They also say "Capricorn", rather than "Capricornus". I think it's just one of those divergences that happen when a word serves two different purposes over a long period of time.

Why would they all need to end the same way? I don't know of any language in which all nouns, or even all names, must have any phonetic traits in common.

That explanation gets my vote. Astrologers are in the entertainment business. What looks cool and sounds good sells.

I know of at least one (Esperanto), though it's kind of a special case. But it goes to show that although natural languages don't do this, people who invent languages (and people who talk about constellation names) sometimes assume that it is a desirable feature.

For the same reason their star charts are 2000 years out of whack.
