Default Is pop music for dumb people?

Do you think there is a correlation between the type of music one listens to and intellegence? If so what is the most smartest music?

One "dumb people" thread wasn't enough?

Pop music is for the young. Don't make me get all Don Rickles on you.

Leonard Cohen once said, "Songs have a very specific purpose. They must be measured by their utility. Any jaunty little tune that can get you from one point to another as you drive, or get you through the dishes, or that can illuminate or dignify your courting I always appreciate." We don't always have to separate music into "intelligent" and "dumb."

This non-spring chicken likes everything from chant and Palestrina to some of the latest pop offerings. The musical styles may vary, but my requirements remain the same: quality.

Don't try to pigeonhole me or affix a label.

BTW, what with the current focus on the subject of "dumb"?

Well, with both of us posting a lot, that would make for an inspirational surplus.

Well, I'm similar in that I listen to a lot of different kinds of music.

I enjoy Opera Classical too.

And Grunge and Heavy Metal as well.
Classic Rock rocks and alternative does too.

Sometimes I like Elevator muzak.

I like a small amount of Country and Rap- but very little. Other than that.. Heck, the other day I was blasting George Gershwins "Rhapsody in Blue" at max volume.

Right after Nickleback.
Smart? Dumb? Or just crazy?

With you on all that, except perhaps the Muzak and rap.

The Muzak dislike is from working in a couple of department stores while in college. It was like being trapped in the Ministry of Love.

The rap dislike is from the occasional four-wheel ghetto blasters that go through the neighborhood shedding trim and sheet metal due to the vibrations. Plus there's only so much that can be done screaming bad rhymes over syncopated rhythms.

The neighbors must wonder sometimes when I'm using the speaker system and Mahler's Ninth is followed by Blue Cheer doing Summertime Blues.

Rap is OK; depends on who's doing it. Muzak is not OK; it's just music that has been reprocessed to remove any emotionally affecting elements.

And as for the OP, no, pop music isn't for dumb people. Lotteries, racism and velcro shoes are for dumb people, not pop music.

I have widely varied taste. In my collection ranges stuff from the 1600's through last year. I wouldn't put any single label on the type of music I like, and within almost any given genre, I have songs I both like and dislike.

You'll be feeling pretty smart for buying a ticket if you win several million dollars.

Yeah, and I resent the comment about velcro shoes. I'm a proud user. Actually, where I live you often have to take your shoes off several times a day. It saves time!

I think you'd want to start by asking, why do people listen to the music they listen to? You'd probably find there are a number of factors. We tend to listen to the music that people around us (family or friends) listen to. We tend to listen to a kind of music that fits our self-image. We tend to listen to music that we find aesthetically appealing.

Agreed. The lottery is the one form of gambling where you can probably afford to lose your stake, and where a big win will not make you addicted.

It might be argued that it is not ethical - you get rich at the expense of millions of people who maybe can't afford to lose their stake - but that's a different and not-very-strong argument.

Two points about the main topic:

1. Does anyone think they don't have a broad taste in music?

2. Even if pop music generally catered for the unintelligent (which I don't think is the case by any stretch) that doesn't mean only "dumb" people listen to it. Most intelligent people like to "slum it" occasionally.

Ok. Jens and I have defended two out of three.

Who is going to step up and defend racism as not dumb?

C'mon.

We only got two out of three here...
