Default New MMO: Age of Conan.

Anyone looking to give this one a shot when it comes out next week? I know there's a handful of MMO gamers lurking about. Anyone do the beta? Thoughts, anyone? I've preordered it myself.

Looks pretty interesting to me. I'll wait for the reviews before I decide to order it.

I should be in on Saturday. I'll give an update. As a side bonus, here's an excellent physics program/time waster: http://www.octaveengine.com/casual/trial.html
The page is in Japanese, but the trail program itself is in English. It's very, very well done. Tried it out last night, and you can do a myriad of neat things with it.

I didn't sign up for the beta...didn't like the idea of a 17gig download. Plus, IIRC, you have to be a paid FilePlanet member...and I refuse to pay fileplanet for unrelated reasons.

I thought about giving it a shot when it comes out...but I'm not so sure it will run adequately on my machine. And the reviews I caught once the beta NDA was lifted haven't really piqued my interest any. I'm still waiting for the Warhammer MMO.

I like the spellweaving system, now that I've read into it. Apparently, you don't hit a shortcut button and fire off a predetermined spell. Instead, you put different components together, and fire off the result. You could, for example, simply inflict damage on an enemy with fire. Or, if you're feeling froggy, you could add a fire vulnerability effect in with that, and so add more damage to it. You can stick together as many effects as you like, but if you weave too much, and stretch farther than you should, then the effects range from damaging your own soul, to death. Very interesting. They made magic in this game difficult, and risky. I like that a lot.

I've never been one to play caster classes. Though, I'm not much into hulking tank classes either. My main toon in WoW is a hunter (Ranged, yes, but not a caster), and the secondary one I've been playing is a rogue (for those not WoW initiated, stealthy assasin class). I have a priest too, and that's a "caster", but not offensive.

There's assassins in this game, as well. I hear the controls are rather like tekken, and you can execute combo style attacks when you're learned enough with your weapons. Every review I've read says the controls are extremely simplistic and natural-feeling. And of course, there's PvP! I can't wait to dig in. Another challenge to look forward to.

Yeah, I may still end up trying it out. It's one of those things where you'd like to wait for a bit for some good reviews and give them time to take care of any nasty bugs that might be waiting to surface--but at the same time, it's more fun to start when everyone else is too, so you're not startng from a disadvantage. It hits stores on the 20th, right?

Yep, but if you preorder it, you can download it ahead of time and log in on the 17th: Giving you 3 early days in before it officially goes live. That's this saturday I believe.

Yeah, I looked into it a while ago. It sounds good, though the graphics at that time were still in the "every avatar looks exactly the same, oh and by the way, they're all male" stage.

I think I am going to give it a try though, it's the most promising thing to come out in a while and I need my MMO fix
Been playing Guild Wars since I stopped WoW, but it's just not the same. More like an adventure game with some multiplayer capability.

Is the PvP a mandatory aspect, or could it be avoided?

With the upcoming changes to City of Heroes (player created content), I'm not really looking to move. That magic system sounds interesting though. I'll be surprised if it lasts a year without getting dumbed down, but I like that idea.

I am actually not sure. Mandatory PvP would definitely turn me off the game.
(PS: needed to update my icon to compete with Tog's - for the Horde!)

I've started the download. Since I pre-ordered, I got me a key that'll let me log in early. Warning: Have PLENTY of hard disk space open for this download. It's 135 GIGS.

Dunno if it is PvP mandatory. I don't know if there are "safe" servers and the like, but there's bound to be safe "zones" where guards will rain on any assaultee's parade.

According to the website, there are PvP servers, PvP-RP servers, and PvE servers (But no PvE-RP...which I find odd, as most of the RP MMO'ers I know prefer PvE *shrug*).

It's funny...I was cleaning out my computer last night. Getting rid of dozens of little programs and crap that was cluttering up my HDD. When I went to finish up after running Spybot, I was curious and went to read more on AoC. I thought I'd check the syst specs again and was happy to see my PC met all the min reqs...except that it needs 30gigs of HDD space. I have 20 free right now after deleting all the unused stuff. And even if I could manage to squeeze another 10 gigs of room, I'm not going to completely fill my HDD.

So...it looks like either I need another HDD or I won't be playing. 30 gigs? Wow. And people are downloading this (17gig compressed, IIRC).

Hrm. The download said it was 135 gigs. That's kind of an odd discreprancy. Then again, I'd just woken up, maybe I'm remembering wrong or didn't read it right.

I'm torn between the different classes. I've found a wiki site with details on the game, wikiaoc.com, and have been reading up so I'm a bit more prepared for when I do dive in. Currently, I'm torn between barbarian, assassin, demonologist and necromancer. I'm a PvPer guy myself, and assassin is the obvious choice for that, but I also make it a habit to stay away from cookie-cutter builds and "the usual".

#EDIT: For that gent that did the beta already, do summoned pets have the ability to be put in formations?

If I play, it'll probably be an assasin or a ranger. I know, real original...that's what my WoW toons are. But that's the style of play I like. I'm leaning towards assasin, because what I read basically said that almost every class can use ranged weapons, just the rangers do more damage with them. That sounds boring to me. But assasins can only use daggers, which limits what attacks they can do while mounted. *shrugs*

I wouldn't want to be mounted as an assassin anyway. It's harder to sneak up on a target with iron-shod hooves. Also, from what I've read, the Ranger has ranged combo-style attacks that other classes don't get. In addition, if they shoot while "hiding", a landed shot has a chance of putting a temporary hold on the target. I.E. snipe an enemy player, and suddenly he can't move, and doesn't know where you are, giving you the opportunity to add a considerable amount of additional shots in while he tries to determine your location and counter.

It's a brilliant combat system, I really cannot wait until I can log in on Saturday!

Also, you may like this aspect, Fazor: The rangers can utilize a first-person perspective to shoot. In first-person, they can shoot farther than they could normally, but it's a manual aim. No lock-on-and-shoot. From third person, they get a firing "cone" that they need only to line up with their target and then fire.
