I find it funny that most people tend to have longer signatures than their posts. Was there some manner of contest where board participants sought to have the longest possible signature and have it remain a signature rather than a piece of fiction or screed?

I think you may be exaggerating a little. We actually do have rules here governing how long our sigs can be, which is generally the same ruleset as usenet netiquette. Very few sigs here are unreasonable, and rarely for long.
