Smile Humerous examples of Bad Science

I was looking for a filler for a church news letter, and although I did not pick it (it was to long for the space available), I thought you might like this one

See here

Enjoy!

Funny! Especially liked the first and last.

My mother and her kin say warsh (for "wash").

Heard John McCain say "Warshington (D.C.)" the other day.

My dad said "warsh," too. And he graduated from Warshington High School

He didn't need to get that extra "r" from some other region, though. I think he moved it himself out of "futher."

Most of my relatives are from Iowa, and they do "warsh" (as I'd pronounce "war", I usually think of it as "worsh") as well, though, they do seem to get "Washington" right mostly, most of the time. Midwest accent is very similar to California accent, but that's one difference I noticed. Another two, which I suspect are more in-family mistakes than accent, are "cowflower" for cauliflower and "sniffer" for snifter.

I'm a native Iowan [currently residing elsewhere for 16 years]. But I know what you mean [and I know correct pronunciation! ]. An elderly neighbor lady said "pianny" instead of "piano," lol.

The dialect which says "worsh" stretches clear across the central corridor of the US from KS, NE through the Ohio valley to the Shendoah Valley. You hear other things like potatah instead of potato; Sundi and Mondi; ideal instead of idea; col-yumes instead of columns, ahrn instead of iron.

wow-I grew up in Moorefield, literally adjacent to (west of) the Shenandoah valley. Mom says "worsh" and "worshington" but only by a few miles, it seems! Actually, I say "potatah", and mom says "Sundi" and "Mundi". Neither of us say ideal, colyumes, or ahrn. But we both pronouce the I in Iron "southern style", which despite how it's written in comics, is way different from "ah" or "a".

The latter three will be found west of the applachians, down the Ohio valley. There is a surprising amount of southern and applachian influence on the dialects due to large diasporas from those regions in the beginning of the 20th century.
