Somehow I get the feeling most of us already know this, based on your prior posts here, here, here, and here.

As I recall, Paul, that was arguably one of the most over-hyped and hysterical bits of reporting ever witnessed in this country. A few blurry frames of what was, in all likelihood, a shrimp trawler. The hysteria reached its maximum when they kept showing a few frames of the "UFO's impossible manoever", when in reality it was a result of camera shake. Similarly, the mysterious shape changing was the result of the photographer trying to focus (and failing) on what was actually a very bright and unknown point of light out in the darkness. Since it was impossible at the time to distinguish where the sky ended and the earth began, I would suggest that they simply had no clue what they were seeing, filmed it to the best of their ability, and the knee-jerk TVNZ media machine of the time took it and ran with it.

Quite frankly, to nearly everyone around at the time, it was a bit of a joke.

PS - why don't you contact those papers yourself and get the stuff first hand from the archives?

I will contact the newspapers and I contacted the National Archives this morning, I am going up on Monday the file is for public viewing..I realise what your saying about the hype thing but there is a lot more to it than that.

regarding UFO phenomena I have kept in touch with Captain Robert Collins(USAF retired), he has spent time at Wright Patterson AFB is an interesting person to speak to,but yes I will visit the archives next week.

I have an idea that nowadays all one needs to do is go to the New Zealand Room at the Wellington Public Library, look up the microfilms of the newspapers, and take photocopies or save them to CD-R.

That's what I've been doing for years at my local library, although I've only been able to save to CD-R since late last year. I've just recently finished collecting and typing up all the newspapers clippings I could find during the early part of the space race, from September 1957 to April 1958. I also ordered microfilms of The West Australian newspaper and copied and typed up most of its articles and letters to the editor about Apollo 11.
